Forum Quiz - Saturday...

Following on from last weeks hugely successful (5 entries)  inaugural Forum quiz – we'll be having another one this Saturday morning... an otherwise very quiet time on W4.com.The quiz will begin at 11.00a.m – and end at 1.00p.m ...Of necessity – it will involve lateral thinking ....  This is because – unlike all other quizes – in pubs and on TV all our Forum contestants will be sitting with Google at their fingertips...So the challenge for the quizmaster is to partially outfox Google ...Some questions easy – some a bit harder...Subject matter:- non geeky -  general knowledge – a bit filmy - leaning towards arty farty...The rules will be posted on this thread when I've invented them...Reigning quiz champion is Samantha-Jane ... with Annabella a close runner-up..closely followed by David and Lynette.....

Colin, I think you are being rather harsh on Stuart.  I have no reason to feel concerned that participating in the Quiz would expose me to anything apart from a most welcome and enjoyable distraction.  I would like to credit Stuart for putting his time and energy into the proposed quiz and think it very community spirited of him.  People can choose to be part of this or not.  It's as simple as that.  I am sure you have our best intentions at heart tho, you seem a decent chap!

Well... I have done my best. I gave up a long time ago... a lot of references to movies etc, and other 'artistic' type things. As such, most questions I didn't even know where to start. Now, if the quiz had been based around the scientific world, perhaps I wouldn't have given up so easily!Thank you very much Stuart - lots of fun.

Anyway ... thanks to all of you for taking part... I enjoyed it too..The outright winner of the Gold Medal, the Gold Cup and the title of undisputed king of the Forum Quiz in August 2009 ......is COLIN MURPHY – with  13 points....In second place with 10 and a half points is ANNABELLA  FLEMINGSpecial mention to Angela Knight with 6 points from just 3 answers.....ANSWERS...Q1  Busby Berkeley..  I juggled the quote from A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Sq (because of Google) – from “there were angels dining at The Ritz..Vera Lynn ....  Ruby Keeler & Dick Powell..I got some American friends to bring me over a box set of all the BB musicals .. 42ns Street, the 2 Goldiggers . .. Footlight Parade.. Dames... Q2  Coulsdon & whatever they call themselves.. everyone found the website – which was the idea.Q3  James Joyce  ...The king was James 1 .. his bible ... also the plots – loads of them inc 1605.. the traitor – Lord Haw Haw... William JoyceQ4  Avanti – one of my favourites.  Wilder got everything right here .. but made one dreadful miscalculation.  The plot depends on a US businessman taking a secret annual holiday and meeting up with his occasional lover.  American ladies hated the film is case it gave their husbands ideas.The Trotta (spelt with an a) are central – I changed it because of google.  Toothpick was a reference to the wonderful T Charlie in Some Like It Hot..Q5  everyone got it right... I wouldn't have...Q6  Rosalind Franklin.  I made a R3 doc about her in the 1980s... BBC TV used all my stuff to make their movie Life Story.. with Juliet Stevenson as Rosalind.  Bit of a heroine of mine..Q7  William Shakespeare... the fist line is a will as in last will and testament.  The bit of maths is a sum... translate that from latin to I am... hence Will-i-am.  Shake a cocktail ... and carry a spear..That was a tough one...Q8  Sigiriya Rock.  Now that the war looks over – Sri Lanka is a great place to visit.  It has beaches etc – but the culture tours are fascinating.  So much to see.. And lovely people who smile... Lots of nice Buddhists.  The frescoes are glorious... quite sexy too....

Ah Susann... you ask about next Saturday..Maybe – I'm not sure.We had a lovely group earlier on and everyone had fun...But it was hardly a crowd-puller..I never expected us to draw the vast majority -the forum busybodies and the opinionated who only come to complain -But I hoped we'd have attracted a few more of the real 'characters' -the zany brigade – the bright things who know the meaning of fun..The nearest we got was our sweet little Bred Fraywho always comes(npi) like a moth to a lightbulb 'til he gets bored...Is it worth trying again next week?Or once a month?Shame about the cricket....

I've been busy so couldn't partake - and to be honest I'm crap at quizzes.I did try your previous movie quiz and got as far as "Clockwork Orange" (and Roddy MacDowell, was it?) but because of my sadly limited brain power I just couldn't connect to "If". You need imagination and a good thought process for that sort of thing and some of simply haven't got it.

Calvi was led down that alleyway by the side of the John Bull....from Thames Road...to board a vessel to take him secretly to BLACKFRIARS BRIDGE where his body was later found by others hung! Thanks for that Guy. Yes Brian Reece Pc49 who used to be on the wireless. I recall that he lived in the riverside house woth the big willow tree outside..a beauty that I'm not sure if it has survived. A fascinating area down there. ..with that old water fountain which exCouncillorPaul Lynch had restored. .then there was the Marine Garage...for boats only...and the celebrated old Wheelhouse Club...long demolished and developed into apartments.Mr David Stanners lives nearby in Grovr Park Road and he survived the blast from the V2 bomb when it landed in Staveley Road in September 1944. David was just at the Fauconberg Road junction. His niece is the top lady at Saatchi and Saatchi. (Jim you do go on!)
