I read on here about a man who has just been arrested and sentenced to 10 months in prison for an exposure incident, I am not saying that what he did was okay. Then I read about people arrested for torturing their pets, even killing them who get shorter sentences

Hopefully we have heard the last of Soni but someone with a similar take on things will probably emerge in the not too distant future.The 'migrant crime' narrative emerged in the States and has been used as the justification for the ICE deportations even though previous administrations had already been deporting foreign criminals. Now most people being deported have no criminal record.The idea's transportation to the UK represents the Trumpification of far right politics in the UK. Like most post-Truth narratives there are some facts buried in the lie — we can't properly check irregular arrivals, illegal immigrants do commit crime and come here with mental illnesses.The data we have is imperfect. There are good reasons for this which do not relate to a government conspiracy to hide the truth from us. However, there is enough for us to have a clear picture of what is actually happening. Research from both the US and the UK has come up with the same result — illegal immigrants are less likely to commit crimes (other than those relating to their immigration status) than people born in this country. If you step back from the noise for a second this should not be a surprise — they generally pay large sums of money up front to traffickers to work in a job that will take some time to recover what they paid to get here. The last thing they want is to attract the attention of the authorities.This conclusion gets further support from other data — as other users of this forum have pointed out, London is home to around two thirds of illegal immigrants currently in the UK. This number has grown massively over the last six years or so but there has been no corresponding rise (above the general trend across the country) either in crime overall or sexual offences in particular.If you live your life primarily online rather than having contact with the real world, it is very easy to be convinced of a migrant crime wave as every crime committed by a non-white person will be seized on as proof and amplified.
