The swifts are back. Seen over Glebe Estate and by the river.

Did you know that they are very, very acrobatic, just like a Spitfire? The only difference between the two is that a Spitfire can take off from the ground, a Swift cannot and needs a drop to get airborne

Caught the 94 to Shepherd's Bush last night and was delighted to see so many swifts en route.

Try the Merlin App created by Cornell University. Great fun for identifying birds in the area. The Swifts are very much back.

Three of them seem to be back today and over St Albans/Rusthall Ave/Kingscote. A Facebook group re UK swifts suggests that a weather system has held some back and more will come later this week. They're definitely later than recent years.

I saw and heard one this morning over Kingscote Road. Last year there were 4-6, but perhaps it's early days yet...

The Victorian and Edwardian housing in Chiswick is great for swifts so we used to have much more but the eaves in which they lived are reduced in number due to loft conversion and insulation measures. There are a number of local organisations who will supply you with swift boxes to attach to your property but how effective these are I can't say.

How many? There were worryingly few last year.
