Sir Sadiq and Crime

I must admit, I lost my cool when listening to the News Agents podcast yesterday.Khan was on the show and gas-lighting the audience. He tried to boast about how he has reduced crime in London - focusing on the fall in homicide rates. He failed to acknowledge what most London folk see, feel and know - that criminal activity is totally out of control.Our high street shops have been ravaged by shoplifting, car theft is a daily occurrence, people cannot wear expensive watches without being mugged, and young girls cannot walk the streets without fear of being attacked. Khan clearly has an agenda…. one that is failing London, including our own W4….Sorry to post a political message… just saddened by the decline in cultural standards…

I have replied to questions on Nicky Campbell's Show on Five Live and/or on Radio 4's Woman's Hour about all sorts of things eg attacks on the tube or in the cinema that I never told my parents about or never told the police about.  People do often tell about their experiences.  Others tell of their experiences like going for an illegal abortion and being picked up by their father afterwards who would never ever ever mention the subject... All of this has been happening all the time.  It's nothing new.  It gets better and worse.  It changes. I was just reading yesterday about huge amounts of cocaine coming into the country in crates of bananas destined for the supermarkets years and years ago.  We didn't  hear about a lot of it then.  Social media has increased the spread of news - and rolling news makes it even worse.  I saw a Facebook post today designed to whip up hysteria.  Who knows if it is even true.  People with agendas write things to cause discussion and improve understanding but often division too.  Just like in the Falklands War when every time they announced a ship had been sunk you had to check that it wasn't the same one that you had already heard about.Unfortunately there are some people with prejudices who deliberately insist on stirring up prejudice for political reasons which causes even more alarm when the majority of residents of all communities get on very well together.I've seen the Mayor being asked very awkward deliberately designed questions to cause dissent and division between Londoners, people of different political parties who are quite deliberately attempting to lay bear traps for him.  So I'm not surprised that he is very wary - his job is to keep Londoners together and not fall prey to those trouble makers trying to cause division.  Boris Johnson looked just like a naughty schoolboy.  He was charismatic but a charismatic chaotic disaster who was responsible for closing and selling off masses of police stations making it harder for anyone to report any crimes!  But never mind he did have a had a lovely smile and a nice accent.  Don't see much of him now though.

I think anyone trying to defend Khan or pretending that crime in London is anything other than unacceptable is part of the problem.The rape gang cover ups. Independent shops being forced to close because of unchecked shoplifting. Foreign criminal gangs operating pop up shops. Knife crime. Car theft. All totally unacceptable in this day and age when we have the technology to identify the culprits.  Our country will not thrive when we have people in authority who set the bar so low.

But it isn't just up to the Mayor!We have to also take responsibility as well as to take sensible precautions - just as we always used to have to.  It is ridiculous to just think that rights are the answer to everything.  There have always been people with weaknesses and problems who can cause trouble for the unwary.  There have always been peoplle who are worse off and envious of others but flaunting jewellery and waving mobile phones is just asking for trouble and something that children need to be taught as well as advised on what they wear and how they wear their clothes.We live in a great global society - like it or not - you can't put the clock right back.  We'd  have difficulty even feeding and clothing ourselves if we did.  Just take a look at where all the food in the supermarkets is coming from - it's from ALL over the world and we want everything cheap regardless of other people's working and living conditions ALL YEAR round despite seasons and weather conditions which makes it even more disgusting of us to waste food ie not eat it.  I believe a huge number of women in the past never reported any of the unwanted sexual advances they experienced whereas they are more likely to do so now but I also suspect we were taught to be more careful.  Even if we didn't take as much notice as we should have done we may have had a better idea we were taking risks.  You can't always avoid problems!

Anyone who has lived in London for the last 30 years and thinks this is a period of high crime is either a bot, brainwashed or a idiot.  It was dirty, dangerous - filled with prostitutes, junkies and graffiti in the 90s, got a lot better in the noughties, fell back a bit in the 2010's and is now continuing the reduction. Throughout all this period it has always got cleaner, better maintained with less litter and graffiti.  The sexual assualt numbers are a complete red-herring.  Ask any woman who used to ride the tube in the last century - including my sisters.  They were assaulted on a regular basis, but in those days they were expected to suck it up.The only area where crime is worse is phone snatching.  If you wander about waving £500 in your hand...If you think that pickpocketing is bad here, visit any southern European City.  My wife and daughters use the tube and walk alone without any worries.Sheep and snowflakes think London is a dangerous city.

Janice, ignore Roland's stridency but you have misread the figures. The number of offences will have increased from 879 to 907 over the six month period up by 28 in six months. While every one of these incidents is a woman or girl distressed or traumatised, it is not strong evidence of a renewed crime wave. Public information campaigns by TfL to encourage people to report offences, a changed attitude from police officers towards victims and more wifi on public transport could account for some or all of the rise.The longer term picture is that sexual offence convictions are up but surveys show that women feel safer - which points to the conclusion that more creeps are being reported and punished. In the past their crimes might not been reported or regarded as not significant enough to warrant an investigation - times have changed.

In past years I didn't have to do this. It’s great murder is down but I don't think this can be attributed to khan. Crime has changed. He claims the non-existence of London grooming gangs as an example.I would also point out that Laila Cunningham, the former senior crown prosecutor, now running for mayor is a Muslim. Further proof if needed that Reform is colour blind.Systemic shoplifting is so profound the public has accepted it as soft crime, to be waived away. Sex attacks on the tubes are also profound. How brave of the gang of four or five assailants to rob me of the £100 I had on me. David, what happened to us was not verbal, that sounds disgusting.  I think if every incident was reported the true figures would not be given, we did report the incident in the car park and measures were taken but we were still not happy using it.

I'm going out on a limb here, Janice, but I'm guessing you didn't report these incidents. Point being many do not because they see no point.In the last six months, both times in Hammersmith:"go back to the states you f--king puffter "This after trying to turn his car into me as I was cycling into Kensington. In the correct location, at that. White, older British man for those who need details."I'm going to f--cking kill you" along with "I'm going to stab your f--cking eyes out with my key" which was being brandished.This was accompanied by multiple physical shoves. Mixed race, younger British woman. Outside two banks so plenty of CCTV footage which was proven to show what happened.The first one I didn't report. The second I did but to no avail. Not the first time reporting led nowhere. So when an actual assault and threat occurs, do we count them as crimes? Or are we only using numbers that undoubtedly underreporting the reality out there?

Janice I am really sorry that you feel unsafe enough to make these changes to your lifestyle. Can I ask what is causing you to feel this way?As a woman I feel quite safe going about the city alone by day and by night, as do my daughters and most other women I know. Statistics show the streets are safer than they were and this is born out by my own anecdotal experience. In the eighties, when I was a teenager, London was rough - not a weekend went by without someone we knew (usually male) being the victim of violent street crime. In the last few years I do know teenagers who have been robbed or attacked but no older friends at all. I voted for Shaun last time, cos us women felt unsafe then, we had to stop meeting up of an evening, and now never go out alone, its all well and good some men telling us how safe we are, we have had to change our lives so that we feel safer, it's heading for a dreary life.  If others also feel unsafe they have alternatives to vote for.

Yes, social media and algorithms are used to whip up hysteria when we wouldn't have heard about so many crimes so often as on rolling news.  Crimes you think may be local turn out so often to be somewhere in the US!  A desperate attempt to whip up readership!We should also be looking at the disruption that is caused here by those with poor mental health, alcohol and other problems and the fact that the police and other services are often called in and have to spend hours dealing with these emergencies.

This discussion gives an interesting view on the rise of REFORM.The continued referencing of the type "criminal activity is totally out of control" followed by the mixed time frame fear-messaging of "ravaged by shoplifting, car theft is a daily occurrence, people cannot wear expensive watches without being mugged, and young girls cannot walk the streets without fear of being attacked",  are the usual attempts to whip up a splenetic reaction.To halt & reverse crime requires continuous & considered professional and civil action against it. Laila says she'll scrap ULEZ. What an ambition. Does it mean she wants pollution to be increased ?  It's simply recognition that the bold moves taken by the GLA (and with the consent as a democratically elected authority), have already done the hard work. Looking forward to Londoner's mayoral election choice for 2028. Hopefully it will shut-up these shrill ninnies.

There is some Trump-style gaslighting going on above that the actual facts are fake news.  Perhaps some people struggle to cope with a Muslim mayor actually being successful in leading improvements in our wonderful diverse multicultural global city and they are desperate to show this model (like New York) is a failure. It's very unpatriotic and borders on racism by these snowflakes.

This fantastic news about the murder rate has clearly caused problems for those who have been peddling the narrative that London is some sort of crime filled hell whole. For those that don't believe that our city is safe and getting safer, maybe you should reflect whether or not your feeling that crime is rising is down to what the algorithim on your social media feeds is telling you or personal experience. Not a single one of my friends, family or aquaintances living in London has been a victim or witnessed a crime over the last three years (other than shoplifting and cybercrime). In the decades prior to that the number of instances was low and my experience chimes with what the data is telling us.The untruth that London is particularly blighted by crime is generally pedalled by people outside the capital or even outside the country with the enthusiastic support of people like Elon Musk who currently presents a far greater risk to women and girls in the capital than anyone else. I'm disappointed to see that so many people on this thread, who I presume live in London , have been gullible enough to fall for this fabrication. Regularly polls and surveys show Londoners generally feel safe. A YouGov poll published in the last month revealed that 63% of Londoners say London is a safe place to liveand 81% feel safe in their own local area.
