RIP Ian Balding

Sad news. Interestingly, Ian won the derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with Mill Reef in the same year and became champion trainer. All in the year Claire was born. The list of horses of note is far too long. But we have Son Andrew keeping up the name in stellar fashion I wonder in 2026 if Andrew would rather win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe over the Epsom Derby. Only ask that, as the derby has lost its way in the racing world over many years now.

Oh yes, I remember Selkirk. British bred horses never did well in the Breeders Cup. Bred for turf, not dirt. I know they have some turf races now, but did they always?

Come to think of it. I remember being at the Breeders' Cup At Gulfstream Park in 1992 and backing the balding horse Selkirk. Unfortunately, the Breeders' Cup back then was not suited to European horses for many reasons, unlike now. Did get to watch AP Indy win. The only winner I had on the Saturday. But also see Lester Piggott airlifted to hospitalafter a horrific fall on Mr Brooks.
