One of the all-time umpiring rates Dickie Bird has walked back to the pavilion just a few runs short of his century.My he Rest Ina plPeace and with heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

The doyen of umpires, all tics and nervous twitches, he was loved by players and spectators alike, except maybe by spin bowlers.Dickie would never give a slow bowler an lbw unless it was a full-on plumb decision.I expect MCC members will vouch for a life size statue (complete with famous cap) to be erected behind the Lords pavilion.

Indeed,may he rest in peace.One of the game's great characters.I was lucky enough to meet him briefly at the 1999 Ashes test at Sydney.

Oh no. Can't he appeal? He was in the crowd at one  of the recent England games and he looked hardly changed.He was a "character" and no mistake about that.I shall be playing Roy Harper singing "When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease" in tribute.
