Dawat - Devonshire Road

Hi,There were some recent posts about Dawat on Devonshire road which is a new restaurant.  Mostly, people were unhappy that it wasn’t licensed for alcohol.  I bought a Tandori Chicken and Chickpea curry from there today for dinner and I was delighted.  The food was excellent and the takeaway specials very good value.  I bought two takeaway specials and split it up.  The price is not much different to a M&S curry ready meal but the food far better.Since M&S is out of order Dawat will be on my Friday night rotation.I have no connection to Dawat and am merely a neighbour!Joe

I'm pleased that my suggestion that the Dawat may be Pakistani was seemingly correct.In Hounslow, deep down the Hanworth Road is "The Taste of Pakistan" restaurant. It was busy even during COVID!Their drink is called "LASSI" ...and is available in different flavours.The clientele appears overwhelmingly Pakistani. Give Lassi a try?

Our local Dawat (= feast in Urdu) seems to be part of a rapidly expanding chain of ‘Pakistani’ restaurants based in Tooting. Their menus are extensive and have plenty of interesting drinks that don’t contain alcohol.  I guess insisting upon it must be like demanding a steak in a vegetarian restaurant, but maybe they need to make things clearer up front.  One could equally take exception to all the meat presumably being halal, with all that entails. Otherwise, there’s always ‘curry nite in ‘spoons’!

I think ( from looking it up previously) it does.Good luck to them. I like a drink, but there are plenty of places you can drink and eat, and one place out of many that doesn't serve alcohol isn't going to shake chiswick to the foundations!In a years time we'll know if it was a good idea for Dawat

We had a take away. Food was great. Other people were eating in the restaurant and sat outside at the pavement tables. They all seemed to be enjoying the vibe!

My views are not based on Dawat, BUT! If it's not a restaurant and you certainly can't even BYO, then it's not on my list to visit. I will tune back in next year

It’s really not a restaurant - go somehow else where you can drink & get much better food

There are two sides to this coin Julian (unlike the coin used of late by Indian cricket captains). For the many diners who are not flush, but enjoy a few vinos when eating out, BYOs (Bring your own) are a godsend.Restaurants mark-up now on wines is so exorbitant, we see their regular closure.

The idea of going to a restaurant is not only to eat but drink and possibly be entertained and enjoy the visit. The idea i have to go and get my own drink and then they charge a corkage is bonkers. So the idea of having to bring or get your own drink is fine, but for them to exploit someone with a corkage fee is a bit rich in my book. I just want to turn up, enjoy the occasion and pay the bill. Might as well stay at home and get a takeaway if they do one

Surely you can bring your own drinks? The ever reliable and reasonably priced Rajput on Goldhawk Road also does not have a license but encourages customers to bring your own alcoholic drinks (no corkage cahrge).

take 2HaThat is why other people's comments should be taken with caution and not as fact.Sorry, but you can't run a restaurant with no alcohol in my view. For many, a glass of wine or a beer is a must and not tap water

You've dodged a bullet and can have a proper curry, with drink, elsewhere Gordon...!  Appreciating Joe's feedback this place polarises opinion. My own experience was dreadful and at the time of writing they get a below average 3.7 on Deliveroo which are obviously verified orders as opposed to Google.On the latter, they've inherited the previous restaurants reviews / rating which gives them an inflated score.

Afraid not, Julian (nipped in again today and asked). No alcohol licence nor plans to apply for one. I appreciate this makes me sound like an alcoholic, but I can't manage a curry without a cold beer.

I was told the other day that it now has a license for alcohol. Don't hold me to that statement, just what I was told
