Lucy, it has helped that you have ruled out pubs and curries.Sticking to Richmond, the area I know best, I would recommend Bacco, almost opposite the main line station.Not cheap, but I have always enjoyed my lunches there.

The Kingfisher, Chertsey, is pretty good. It's not the smartest place you'll ever go to but the food and service is good, and it's got ambience. It's right by the river and always busy..
