Turnham Green station during engineering works

We don't know why London Undergrounds seems to have abandoned its practice of shutting Turnham Green during District line engineering works but it probably is partly due to people pointing out how daft it was. Any one needing to get into town in the first weekend of May owes the people who raised this a thank you.

While agree with your dislike of travelling on the Piccadilly line, when working normally, the District line has more space capacity as it stands. TfL don't seem to publish figures anymore but it was one of the least crowded when the last data was published on this in 2019. This is probably one of the reasons why TfL has dug its heels in so much about increasing Piccadilly services at Turnham Green and I don't think for now they will be keen to encourage switching from the District line even if Piccadilly capacity is up.My guess would be that the change in policy is more down to the road chaos that ensued last time they completely shut Turnham Green.

Possibly that is correct but I can't be the only person who preferred to use the District line to the Piccadilly because the latter was so claustrophobic and sweaty, even if the journey was a bit slower. There will be some switching to the Piccadilly which should reduce capacity pressures on the District Line.

It'll be interesting to see if this represents a change of mind set. I can understand why TfL wanted to protect the Piccadilly line from overcrowding, particularly in the central sections but, as the new stock comes online, the extra capacity reduces that risk.  The next test will be if they become more amenable to temporarily stopping at Turnham Green during District line delays when the platform is getting overcrowded. If so this may herald a gradual upgrade of the service ahead of the full introduction some time in the distant future.

TfL seems to go into defensive mode whenever you make a suggestion for improvement. The answer when this issue has been brought up before has always been a categoric 'it can't be done'. Even if this was the case they'd be better off saying that they take the point and they will look into the matter. This appears to be actually what has happened so perhaps the people tasked with resolving these issues are bright and the ones tasked with explaining them less so.
