Obviously it was unfair in 1965 to turf thousands of inhabitants off their mainland to make way for a combined American/British military base. But for David Lammy to try and force through an agreement with the corrupt minister of Mauritius before The Don began office was gung ho and unwise. He may have been talked into giving over a strategic position at an enormous cost to ourselves. My piece was also protesting against the zeitgeist being spoken in schools, universities and media whereby GB should be embarrassed and apologetic about our colonial exploits. No words spoken of all the good we gave to countries: infrastructure, development, railways, roads, irrigation, medicines, education, common law, democracy, ooh I could go on.
