Meanwhile, back with cargo bikes, yesterday I saw a ‘family’ version travelling eastbound along the CHR cycle lane wanting to make a left turn into Windmill Road. On the face of it, this isn’t unreasonable, but, with the cycle lanes both on the south side of CHR, it now looks impossible. But such was the ingenuity of the cyclist - 1) from the cycle lane turn left onto the zebra crossing and cycle across it2) cycle onto the pavement in front of The Hound and turn left3) cycle along the pavement to join Windmill Road4) turn right onto Windmill Road and continue The pavement was busy with pedestrians but the cargo bike managed to make its way through them. Normally a cyclist in this situation should dismount but I guess that’s not practical with a cargo bike.  Instead they were obliged to commit several technical illegalities which wouldn’t have been necessary with separate cycle tracks or none at all.

In some areas people walking are treated with suspicion. "Why aren't they driving". All polling, even by the government when it was trying to show that people didn’t like LTNs, has shown that LTNs are supported. Non-representative objections at consultations, overwhelmingly dominated by older people, can give quite different results, but I’m sure you wouldn’t argue that should be taken as a veto on any action.

It is a good example of the ethical conundrum. If the driver had been in an old mini, had a seizure and driven into a fence at the same speed, she’d likely be dead or seriously injured.  On this occasion, she was unharmed and several children died instead. As a society, do we prefer to save drivers of oversized, heavy cars from the consequences of their actions / choices, or the lives of children enjoying a tea party on the last day of school? As the gun lobby debate has shown in the USA, it isn’t clear cut that a society would prefer to save the children if it means an erosion of freedom or loss of entitlement for the driver.

Every poll ever conducted on LTNs in London shows tat more people support them than don't. Why wouldn't they? They make our streets safer and far more pleasant to move around and live in. People who are too stupid to understand how polling works can't comprehend this but there is much else they are unable to comprehend. This isn't a community forum. It's a cesspit. They point out this is an interesting ethical question - the owner of a Land Rover Discovery is safer, but everyone else is harmed by their choices. Those who choose to use the lightest vehicles - and using a Chiswick Tractor to take the kids to school is about the lightest way to go - are making everyone else safer, but put themselves at more risk.

We see plenty of 'family' cargo bikes around Chiswick, with children conveniently placed in the front at car bumper level so they'll be the first to feel the impact.  No wonder Tabitha and Tarquin weren't happy! (see earlier blog!) We also have many more 'Zoom' delivery cargo bikes and monster e-bikes going down our street as we must be on a favourite route to and from the 'dark kitchens' of the South Acton Industrial Estate. They also have a habit of hurtling along the footpaths across Acton Green Common, and I'm not sure if this is what the prevailing cycling bylaws here intended.  Some have also realised they can conveniently pedal/motor straight through Sainsburys car park, scattering all before them.

LTNs which cover a tiny fraction of London and are all fully accessible to all motor vehicles are operating as such a powerful deterrent to delivery vehicles that traders are being forced to use bikes instead. I mean this a genius take really.3. There are places in Chiswick where people can no longer receive deliveries. Presumably because of LTNs and cycle lanes. Really? Where are these places? Why have the residents not sent out a SOS.4. We looked into moving pallets between units by bike using this pallet trailer - carries up to 200KG:https://www.fleximodal.fr/en_US/bicylift-100I recall that during Covid cargo bikes gained the moniker "Chiswick Tractors" - more in reference to the large increase in Babboe bikes ferrying kids to local schools.I feel it is a nice counterpoint to the "Chelsea Tractors" - mainly Land Rover Discovery models which take up so much space and are both anti-social and, unfortunately, lethally dangerous around schools.Wouldn't it be great if "Chiswick Tractor" caught on and Chiswick forever became synonymous with the move away from cars!

It's back to the past for me. As a teenager I delivered booze to the good folk of Hammersmith and Chiswick for a Fuller Smith & Turner off licence in King Street on an " Open All Hours" type delivery bike. There is an example of this fine machine in the brewery museum. No electric motors or cycle lanes back then! Good to see them back.

It also helps that Chiswick is relatively densely populated and flat, as well as affluent.You've probably noticed that very many of those Ocado Zoom bikes use Fishers Lane. Councillor Biddolph was quite right when she insisted that Chiswick needed protected NS cycling routes, with access for buses and deliveries. Fishers Lane is a great example of this.

Having someone do a delivery on a cargo bike means your likely to be able to pass that off as paying someone the minimum wage to do it thus overall offering a service at a low cost. Not that its a bad thing,some want to work. Saying that,you use to see certain shops delivering sandwiches and more on bikes to buisnesses and more. But no longer see that. That is likely because you now have a local near to you be it tesco or sinsburys and alike.

Local businesses deciding to have deliveries done by cargo bike is in principle a good thing.  Very much back to the future as the butchers lad delivering by bike was a common thing before mass ownership of cars and vans.Obviously it is not appropriate for every business but the issue is whether this is being done for economic reasons - namely, that the existence of cycle lanes makes it quicker and safer - or because the creation of strict LTNs in key customer areas has effectively made it impossible to deliver any other way.  To put in simpler terms are businesses shifting because of the carrot or the stick.The problem is that if the shift is solely because of the stick then for businesses whose products are not capable of being moved by cargo bike we may end up with areas of Chiswick for which deliveries of those type of product cease, of course based on comments in this forum in the past it may be that we already have such delivery desertsFor me the bigger problem with cargo bikes seems to be an excessive number of product recalls for safety reasons; Babboe did a product recall in March, Raleigh did the same (they share the same platform with Babboe), Vogue have done a product recall this month and apparently the Dutch authorities are currently looking at Cangoo and Bakfiels.  Hopefully this is just a temporary blip

The high count of cargo bikes on South Parade is down to the Ocado Zoom warehouse on Sterling Road in the industrial estate. I don't order from them but I do think it is great that a proportion of deliveries is handled in this way. Presumably anything beyond a certain distance is handled by van but they obviously have a lot of customers in the W4 post code area.This shame of it is, this could be a great solution for smaller independent retailers in Chiswick if there was a cargo bike delivery service they could use. I think an attempt was made to get one off the ground previously but it never came to anything.

We have figures for Chiswick High Road. Cargo-bike counts have more than doubled from 38 in a 16-hour day in 2022 to 98 in 2023. At the same time conventional bike counts increased from 2554 to 3280.But that's only the second highest count of cargo bikes in all of outer London; top is on South Parade, with 104 counts. Chiswick tractors got their name for good reason.

I don't think you know what a cargo bike is. It is very Telegraph 2024 mindset to categorise all e-bikes in the same bracket as the illegally modified ones used by gig economy food delivery riders to demonise all electrically assisted bikes. They are not using cargo bikes. Anyway as this article shows it isn't going to stop their take up increasing for all the very good reasons explained to anybody who has the attention span to read something that isn't comic-book right wing propaganda.
