Any views on shared ownership?

I was reading about the new Kew Bridge housing scheme in the newsletter in the context of a relative who wanted to live in this area. On the face of it it looks like a reasonable option delivering a chance of capital gain with costs around the same as the private rental sector.I'd really be interested to hear the experience that people have had with shared ownership. Thus far, from what I've been told, it seems very hit and miss, with some very happy and others saying it has been the worst decision of their life.
