Such a shame it's raining but what a unique opening ceremony in such a beautiful city. Félicitations!

Denis Follows was a Chiswick resident (Barrowgate Road)and his fine career was capped by being appointed Chairman of the British Olympic Committee.Earlier he had been Secretary of the Football Association and before that Secretary of the British Airline Pilot's Trade Union (BALPA)Denis is remembered too ... playing cricket for Old Meadonians in Chiswick House Grounds!

A penalty decision not given to Fiji on the stroke of half time, a full and loud partisan crowd plus the magic of one Antoine Dupont coming off the bench did it for France.

They have been training as a 7's squad for almost three years, and it showed.

As we rarely get to host any truly international sporting events here, they may have had more practise. They were pretty good at excluding our new PM from the top table at the opening ceremony and seating him on the bleachers out in the rain.

The French are so much better at these things than the Brits.
Do we really need a [bearded] bloke in a dress? Oh, wait, it's 2024! Bonkers!

Parts were magnifique, others more mange tout (Rodney), but surely someone could have given the camera lens a swift dry with a chamois?

What a hoot! Loved it although I do think they missed a trick or two.It would have been even funnier if the base torch runner had been done in the style of The Benny Hill Show. Ou la la!Also Clarkson should have been in charge of boats. POWER! Putting a retired Radio Luxembourg in charge of sound recording was genius adding that extra comic touch to the perfectly timed deluge.Well done Paris for giving us the most memorable opening , ever.

Like the Eurovision Song contest and the Olympic games opening I watch snippets if only to keep up with the times.I thought parading along the Seine was a great idea and could have been spectacular but for the rain. But why always the androgyny overload?

Bizarre. The woman singing the French National Anthem was amazing and the location fantastic. The horse galloping up the Seine was spectacular. The rest was largely weird especially the tribute to French fashion. The rain did its best to spoil the show but three cheers to the soaked fortitude of those who doggedly carried on.Personally I don’t think these magnificent games can continue. No country can afford the expense.

Also loved it. Mad, yes; they're always mad. London 2012 was mad.

Guy Debord’s revenge

Dire. Thankfully there is a great rendition of Verdi's Requiem on BBC4.
N V Brooks ● 295d
Loving it. Even the rain can’t dampen their spirit. Andew Cotter is a great commentator too.

Vive La Difference ... personally I think it is shambolic, chaotic, incohesive, unrehearsed, badly produced and badly filmed. Awful.
