This is perhaps tells us more about the company's contempt for its customers than the issue of shoplifting. The claim of a loss of £900,000 is perhaps exaggerated. The actual loss to the company should be calculated on cost price rather than sale price. The true figure for losses, given the massive mark-up is probably closer to half that or about 1% of the company's annual turnover. If Mr Fowler is saying that much of this theft comes from 'posh totty' who shop at the store regularly, then this really should be classified as a customer incentive programme rather than an outright loss. He clearly thinks Planet Organic will lose money if they were to challenge these people when they take stuff. I'm really sceptical the homeless, who are undoubtedly a problem for other shops on the High Road, bother much with Planet Organic. They steal out of need or to order for gangs - have you ever been offered organic tofu for sale in a pub?
