Gas leak in residential area 'not a priority'

Have to admit that if I lived in the blast radius of a potential explosion at the junction of Newton Grove and South Parade, I wouldn't be that reassured that it was standard operating policy to let a gas leak persist for so long if it wasn't deemed to be sufficiently serious.  That Cadent could apparently deem this 'not a priority' raises the question as to whether that is a stance due to genuinely well backed operational experience or yet another example of funds not being available to maintain and repair crumbling infrastructure in this country. I've done a bit of online research into this and gas explosions causing fatalities in this country are significantly increasing due to the latest data. There is a possibility that part of this is down to increased us of LPG canisters and hijacking the supply for drug production but the only way to insure more people don't die due to domestic gas leaks is to make it clear to the investment groups that they will be liable is this due to them making known leaks 'not a priority'.

Can't recall ever smelling gas by St. Michael and All Angels but I agree there are issues underground in that area.  The extended date on the traffic notice appears to be standard practice. It allows them to do the work any time for the remainder of the year in the event that it isn't possible to complete on the originally scheduled date.

The corner of south parade and St Michael and All Angels Church has had smell of gas on and off for about 10 yrs.A few times they have dug up but it returns.Talking issues. When I lived in Mexico, there was a gas disaster in a big city, and basically it was a series of linear explosions over about five miles, along the sewage system. Killed 200 people and damaged 1,000 buildings. These things are not to be ignored!!

There are similar "temporary" measures in place all around my bit of Chiswick, and no doubt many others. The one I'm most aware of (being the nearest to me)can rival the hole in the ground featured in the article in terms of vintage. I flagged it months ago via Fix My Street but Hounslow washed their hands of responsibility, referring me to Cadent, who it appears take a similar laissez-faire attitude to the issue. Once aware of it you will see many of these holes in the ground around Chiswick's streets  with barriers and yellow plastic covers awaiting someone to actually address the problem, whenever that may be. I can only assume the risk of explosion is relatively low, but it doesn't speak well of Cadent's attitude.
