Albert Memorial

I have just read this memorial is considered offensive. I often pass the park and never really considered it so.

Well then why ask a question when you knew the answer? Your not even keeping up with yourself  I like this game. If only someone would pose that question to Farage and his acceptance of a salary and pension from the EU where he hardly ever went. Actually,  that would put me in the same position as you because I know the answer. He's a money-grabbing hypocrite.

Reminds me of the student from University of Cape Town who was ‘awarded’ a Rhodes Scholarship for Oxford worth £100k and when he arrived there it didn’t take him long to demand the removal Rhodes’ statue from the university. He never answered the question on if he despised Cecil John Rhodes so much, why did he apply for the scholarship and then accept it?

Yes, I can now fully understand what the naysayers are banging on about. But, you have to realise that although we wouldn't come up with anything like this in this day and age, the memorial is a reflection of the world as it was then. As so many people have pointed out - it's history, and you can't re-write it, all you can, and should do, is learn from it.

What the Royal Parks report actually says is "Its representation of certain continents draws on racial stereotypes that are now considered offensive."No mention of moving it or anything .

“ Seriously? In most cases it seems to me that this is down to people from countries that have been invaded and colonised “Yes, seriously. The fact is that the people who allegedly suffered from colonialism are long dead so those now getting woke about it are looking to get compensation. History is history - the good and the bad. It’s fantastic to learn about historical facts and, hopefully, learn from them. People need to get over themselves.

"People who draw attention to some of the more unpleasant aspects of historical facts are inevitably looking for compensation down the line." Seriously? In most cases it seems to me that this is down to people from countries that have been invaded and colonised not wanting to accept the invaders' view that they were doing them a favour and that any resulting conflict was their own fault. Your own posts on this forum are a textbook demonstration of why this is necessary.

Not to my taste, but Prince Albert's legacy gave us the RAH, the V&A, The Science Museum, what is now Imperial College, the RAM, the RCO and the rather handsome mansion flats in Albertopolis amongst other institutions. His promotion of arts, sciences and technology in the Great Exhibition raised so much money that scholarships and other similar funds are still being distributed by the Commission that he established.Now I'm no monarchist, but not a bad legacy eh?The equivalent commemorative statue in his home town of Coburg is far better aesthetically IMHO.
