Biden basically followed the agreement as laid out by the Trump administration. I'm aware the Labour Policy Forum recommended compensation of between £11,000 and £29,000 for each of them, but Labour has never given a commitment to that. Given the financial situation that a Starmer government will inherit and the likely cost of remuneration on the scale suggested (£100bn?), it isn't surprising that they may defer addressing this for now. No you were right to include Ghent. They've made it one big LTN and entirely eliminated through traffic. They've discouraged short journeys by car and enabled walking and cycling. Sorry Janice but are you telling us that you think the London-centric nature of the UK economy was the EU's fault? EU regional funding was based on income levels and, despite us being a relatively prosperous country, we did well out of this fund because of our national income disparities. Now that the EU funding is withdrawn the promised replacement funding has simply not materialised.This certainly wasn't the deal I wanted. What I wanted was us to remain in the EU and to continue to benefit from this regional funding. On every measure regional income disparities have got worse in this country since Brexit. This is partly because London is a service based economy and that has been less affected by the non-tariff trade barriers caused by opting out of the single market and rising energy costs. The rest of the country is more dependent on manufacturing and goods trade and therefore has been hammered.

That may be true Janice but were are you saying that the EU failed because it didn't solve every problem that we had?As Matthew points out the regional development funding that came from the EU was never even close to fully replaced by the UK government. What was given out seems to have been given out on the basis of political influence or an ability to work the system - Chiswick is getting some to beautify a car park! Going forward the current government wouldn't even be extending their current level of support as the money was going to pay for the National Service scheme.The bigger problem for deprived regions is the massive changes in the way agricultural subsidies are being given out. Most is now in the form of funding for rewilding. Small farms don't have spare land to do this so it is nearly all going to large landowners including the National Trust.The former EU setaside scheme was illogical and frustrating which is why farmers generally voted for Brexit but at least it did give subsidies to those farms that were really struggling. There is utter fury now among farmers particularly when added to the terrible trade deals that were signed with Australia and NZ (which thankfully Labour is going to renegotiate). The Tories have problems in London and the south east but it may be worse for them in rural areas where they are widely seen to have betrayed farmers.

I have been to both Cornwall and Wales since my trip to Scotland, and the road surfaces in both are much better. The roads in Scotland look like they weren't being properly maintained from well before Brexit - perhaps one of the reasons the SNP opposed Brexit was in the hope of a bigger handout from Brussels on top of the amount they get from the Barnett formula.

Inevitable and totally predictable that Reform will move ahead considering what is happening in Europe. What I'm finding is that the middle class Remain voter who was a bit a bit happy clappy about the EU and coming together with other countries might be a bit annoyed about extra queues when flying down to Tuscany but is delighted at the opportunity to be smug as the problems with Brexit become a more apparent.The real fury is from my friends in commerce and finance who are finding business opportunities curtailed or administrative burdens increased all the time due to leaving the EU. These are generally people who would have tended to vote Conservative in the past and certainly regard me as a bit of a lefty. Now they are the most rabidly anti-Brext group that I know. A poll came out this week that showed that the Conservatives  are in FIFTH place when it comes to votes from the under fifties. They look set to get annihilated in London and the South East and the only way back for them is to try and reconnect with the middle class professionals who used to be the core of their votes in these areas. That will involve some acknowledgement that a closer relationship with the EU is a good thing.
