Hogarth Roundabout Tfl review, recommendations and public consultation

We've been advised by Tfl that because of the forthcoming election the proposed early June meeting with chiswick councillors and Tfl is deferred to July.John

I can scarcely believe it but Adrian seems to be the only person on this thread capable of grasping the description of the changes (unreliable as that is from Councillor Giles).The purpose is probably to separate traffic travelling westbound to the A316 from the traffic continuing west on the A4 earlier to reduce the accident rate at the roundabout caused by the current arrangement where two lanes head to the A316 from the roundabout and merge next to the flyover.But really nobody knows until they see the actual plans.

You are right Adrian a small petrol station was on the corner and the first building it adjoined in Church st.had a post office. Then Fullers extended the wall to encompass that land.

Jeremy, Netheravon Rd South has good access too and from the A4 and gives access to yard off Chiswick Lane South for unloading the artics. It has been that way ever since the Great West Road sliced Netheravon in two.I can't say I have ever seen Fuller's lorries using Chiswick Mall as there is simply no need.I guess the slip road will be closed after the other entrance I mentioned. There should be enough road left.

I didn't know that. I presumed they would pull off the A4 at the slip road in front of the main gate. Why do they use Netheravon Road South?The question which remains unanswered is the original report says the A4 slip road would be closed off making it impossible to drive straight out of the yard onto the A4.

Articulated lorry deliveries are made off the A4 via Netheravon Road South. Why should that change?Delivery lorries from the inner yard cross Mawson  Lane straight onto the A4 some good long way before Church Street. Again, why should that change?I can't see the issue that would impact Chiswick Mall.What am I missing?BTW I have been passing that way for a long time and what I have noticed is the number of employees cars parked outside the brewery has dropped dramatically recently.Why?

I'm obviously far too young to remember the petrol station but the yard at the western end of the brewery does look as though it could be the right shape and size.Even if the worst case scenario isn't realise about brewery access, there is going to be more traffic on Chiswick Mall because that will be the easiest way to get onto the A4 rather than going to Church Street and then doubling back on Burlington Lane.

Am I right in remembering that there used to be a petrol station on the corner of Church St. and Burlington?When it closed the land was incorporated into Fullers site.I think it was either a Jet or Total site.

That's a worrying thought but I'd assume for now that they'd find a way to maintain access to the A4 for the brewery. On the other hand, it may provide a face saving way for Asahi to cash in on the value of the site while being able to claim the decision was forced upon them. Too early at this stage to get worked up about this now though.

The original report from Cllr Giles does say that this slip road will be closed off. If that was the case the delivery lorries would either need to use the gate by Church Street going via Burlington Lane or the existing gates going via Chiswick Mall. This would probably be impractical but perhaps Asahi have decided to relocate.

It has to be assumed access is retained for the brewery directly to and from the A4 otherwise it would be terminal for the business. The lorries would struggle to access the site from Burlington Lane or Chiswick Mall.

What about deliveries to the Griffin Brewery? If you are closing off the slip road by the A4 then isn't this turn in front of the George and Devonshire the way that vehicles will get access?

They could lose some pavement space to make the turn easier but that would bring vehicles closer to the exit of the underpass. The calculation is probably that so few vehicles need access to Church Street, the occasional tricky turn at this point is acceptable.

Indeed, it would be a very dangerous double-back. The turn-in from Burlington Lane would be so tight that cars would almost have to come to a halt to negotiate it - not ideal on the exit from the roundabout! In any case, I suspect that the 12m turning circle on my car would make the manoeuvre impossible.

Church Lane? If you mean Church Street you are right about the dangerous double back. It also would put pedestrians emerging from the underpass at risk and there is a potential for a major hold up if a vehicle is coming from the opposite direction.  The fact that they are considering this must mean that the flow of traffic on the A4 is causing concern. The tailbacks on the A316 seem to indicate that the phasing of the lights have been changed at the Hogarth Roundabout junction.

Doubling back like that to get into Church Lane would seem even more dangerous than going straight down it. I don’t know enough about the accidents they’re trying to avoid here and whether they involved through traffic or local traffic trying to get across the main flow in the short time they’re given. I suppose you could always take some pressure off this roundabout by letting traffic go through Grove Park. What did I say?!

I don't think even an outline plan of what is being proposed is yet in the public domain even one must necessarily exist.In answer to the question of access to Church Street, you would probably now need to enter the A316 southbound and then make a sharp turn immediately in front of the George & Devonshire. I assume that is the case as Cllr Giles said access would be maintained from Burlington Lane and where else could it be?

As you say the outline so far is sketchy but I am not sure that the changes will require more vehicles to use Chiswick Mall. It looks like Church Street access will be maintained through the road in front of the George & Devonshire.It says the slip road in front of the brewery is to be closed but access needs to be maintained for deliveries. Possibly an extra lane will be added here for left turns into the A316.

Looking at the very rough outline of the plans given by Cllr Gabriella Giles in her weekly update, there does seem to be a danger that a lot more traffic is going to need to use Chiswick Mall. Is that something Chiswick councillors think is likely?
