Vogue condemns scruffy Chiswick diners

Its reporter wasn't too happy with how people were dressed at a local restaurant - presumably La Trompette. I get her point, there is an element of disrespect in not making an effort to wear smart clothes at a smart restaurant. Presumably the intention is to send a message that dining here might be a big deal for you but it isn't for me. I was at a funeral about six weeks ago where only a few of us wore 'conventional' funeral attire. Apparently. we didn't get that e-mail stating that are the deceased was a member of a Viking re-enactment group then the more outlandish Viking attire, the better. Probably the first and last time that I have/ will sat two seats away from 'Thor' looking across Brakespear Crematorium at a bunch of 'Lokis'

This article is a nonsense. I have eaten at La Trompette about a billion times and apart from my wedding breakfast have usually worn a polo shirt, jeans and trainers and none of the staff or fellow diners minded (same with Chez Bruce).

I wouldn't go anywhere near La Trompette.  They serve Foie Gras, the most disgusting cruelly-reared food you can eat. For the sake of a bit of patè, it's not worth it.

Badly dressed diners fade into insignificance when compared to the whooping, and almost shouting clientele who invade a large number of Chiswick establishments, making conversation virtually impossibile. Even the best dressed are capable of being most offensive in the regard. Manners maketh man , not what they wear.

I have seen groups of young women plastered and making an exhibition of themselves at Royal Ascot, many times.But they still dressed up and looked gorgeous- up until the 4th or 5th race of the day.

No one would dream of not dressing up for Tea at the Ritz, a day out at Royal Ascot or the Last night of the Proms.Likewise at the mecca of cricket, admission to the Lords pavilion is subject to stringent adherence to their dress code, applicable to both men and women.Jackets and ties are required at all times but may be removed in extreme heat when seated.Women must wear dresses, skirts and formal footwear.Admission to the Oval pavilion however, is tolerant to casual dress.Dress code is often dependent and respectful of the occasion.

Only marginally relevant but the original Liverpool Cavern Club on Mathew Street had a surprising no-jeans policy.  I nearly fell foul of it but managed to talk my way in.

The problem is that "nowadays" "some people" think that the more they have to pay for something, the more this gives them the right to behave as they please.Or maybe it was simply the case that in the past the "poshos" also got to behave abonimably, only us "oiks" never really got to hear about it. This applies almost everywhere. In restaurants cinemas  sporting events etc. Presumably business is so bad generally that they simply can't afford to turn people  away. Not that they'd necessarily know beforehand in any casemichael adams

Many years ago, I stayed in a hotel in Thailand with a number of Restaurants one of which was quite upmarket. When I ate in this restaurant a man at the next table wore shorts and an unbuttoned shirt.  On leaving I completed a feedback form suggesting a dress code for that restaurant.  A few weeks later I received a letter from the hotel thanking me for my kind comments and saying they could not have a dress code as many of their customers were Australian.

Totally agree with you Will.I recall an evening at an up-market restaurant in London when the Manager insisted on someone put on a tie ... which the Manager had a small stock of for such indiscretions !

Are,I remember when I nightclub would not allow entry unless you hadtrousers and shoes on. Maybe that's why a blue suit and white trainers at a funeral is okfor some.

Have you seen the way some people dress when attending a funeral? I've seen some who look as if they've just come off their allotment. Now that IS disrespectful.

It's not a question of being disrespectful to the staff it's a question of being disrespectful to the other diners.If you consider that for many of the other customers a visit to an expensive restaurant is a rare event then sitting next to a table of folk in track suits and trainers spoils their sense of occasion.Would you go to a wedding in t-short and shorts?

The article in Vogue is elitist, pretentious twaddle.What you are wearing is not respectful or disrespectful to the staff it is what you say and how you interact with the staff which is respectful or not.  Pretty sure the owners of La Trompette do not care whether you turn up in jeans or an expensive suit, your money spent in their restaurant is just as good.
