I agree about Iestyn Davies - a wonderful countertenor. James Bowman, sadly no longer with us, was also very fine, if perhaps a little hooty at times. It's amazing how many first-rate countertenors there are these days. For over twenty years Alfred Deller was the only English countertenor soloist until Bowman and Paul Esswood appeared in the late 60s. Apart from his pioneering this falsetto style of singing, Deller also made a great contribution to the revival of interest in Elizabethan lute songs. Jim, you might like to look for a recording of him singing Thomas Morley's setting of 'It was a lover and his lass'.
