Recycling

I saw a programme about waste in the desert in Chile. The shots of the desert with rubbish everywhere were in credible for the size of the area of waste. Due to the dryness the waste just lay there for years. A lady guided the reporter through the wast which was mainly clothes. She picked up a shirt which still had the two spare buttons sewn onto the label. There was even a jacket fron a foresters unrm. A high viz yellow jacket from the New York subway. There were designer label clothes which had never been worn but were unsaleable due to them going out of fashion. Some people were coming out of the towns collecting the clothes and then washing them before putting them on their market stalls.

Those of us who are older are more likely to have an idea of which styles suit us.  It can be well worthwhile you reproducing or finding someone who can reproduce a garment that you particularly love and which suits you. This is something that is often done in other countries without all the ready-made clothes available here which change for the different seasons making it difficult to find the same style twice.

It was interesting to learn a little while ago that some companies are now charging for returns as I think buying online had become too easy for some and the companies weren't able to sell the returned items again.  Many new items in charity shops I suspect are never worn purchases that have been bought and sit innthe wardrobe just in case and fashion changes so fast nowadays for the shops but not so fast for a lot of customers. We learn what suits us.I agree that there are some great and good charity buys.  It was interesting that Mary Portas Queen of Shops revamped some charity shops creating a two tier system for one.  Unfortunately a great many charity shops closed down with the pandemic never to open again.  Hand-me-downs to friends and family and clothes swishes are good too. I'm wearing some today.  Ealing Broadway Centre I notice hosts  one including a specific school uniform shop.

I rarely buy any new clothes,I prefer to buy from charity shops where you can sometimes get brand new or clothes that have obviously not been worn too many times.I bought a brand new looking pair of Levi's the other day for £20.New they are about £120 I think.It costs about £15 to have clothes altered ,although the jeans fit perfectly.The clothes in charity shops are quite often better quality than the stuff pumped out nowadays.I bought a limited edition Steve McQueen Barbour Team jacket a little while ago for £45(they retail,if you can get one,for about £380).I sent it away to the Barbour factory for a clean and rewax,cost £50 and it's now good as new.You have some very good charity shops locally and also in Hammersmith,and you are not giving your hard earned to a big company but aree doing some good with it.If you register for Gift Aid with charity shops,they get a 25% bonus on anything sold that you have donated.

It is hard to buy good clothes now. I once had a Dior jacket, it lasted for years and of course was cheaper in the long run. On the Chile documentary builders were going ang getting wood for house construction as well.

We shouldn't rely on recycling as the answer or excuse for buying carelessly.  It isn't.  It is an end of life solution.  Too much is never resold or Reused as it is not fit for it. The waste hierarchy starts with Reducing and Reusing them there is Repair and Repurpose as well.  Yes, buy better and more thoughtfully, check and follow the care instructions and wear for longer.  I've seen so many garments that have been spoilt by being spun hard or put in the tumble dryer.

Or recycle, take them to charity shops or give them away to those in need. Stop buying crap, buy once buy quality
