Aldi Chiswick

I'm hoping it isn't marketing hyperbole, and that we're one step closer to getting our very own Aldi. It would certainly lessen the pain associated with a visit to our held-together-with-gaffer-tape Sainsbury's. Not so sure about that but they do good quality produce.There used to be a quite grand Booth's store in the centre of Preston with a very well appointed old fashioned cafe upstairs where I was treated to dinner(lunch) by my lovely old Mum a few times.I think it was the first time I had used cloth napkins.

Those who shop at Booth's look down on Waitrose shoppers as bargain hunters. Ye gods, Booth's are expensive.

You can buy from Booths via Amazon Fresh, deliveries across Londonapparently. I may have confused it with that.

While the top managers probably get bigger bonuses the more people they lay off.The problem in supermarkets is more they have laid too many people off than one of recruitment.

'I believe Waitrose do stop and check randomly.'Oh dear! If that ever happened to us, then we would insist on the police being called if they seriously thought there was something dicey going on. If these morons want people to do half their job for them - then that's their problem. Perhaps they should of given some thought to some of the disadvantages before they foisted these things on the public

'I will not,wherever possible,use a self scam machine'Us neither - tried to get our morning papers in ASDA today - only to find the kiosk wasn't working where we always pay, the lady directed us to the self-service and we said no thanks we will not use them, left the papers on the desk and went to another shop where a real human being served us. It is up to all of us to let these bloody shops know how we feel, these things cost jobs and are another nail in the coffin of human interaction.

We have used the Waitrose scan as you shop if an item never scan we stilltook it and got them at the customer service to put it on for us which meansyou still have to wait.  Only once I could scan and pay on the way out butthey stop me and check everything which was all o.k but I never got someof the discounts, apparently you don't get all discounts using the scannerfor some reason.

Self-checkout and self-scan are not the same.Self-scan is great, but you must ensure your items are scanned. A couple a few months ago who had 2 full shopping trollies of food and some booze had a bag scan and one item not scanned means you get a full re-scan, they were not happy. Now I don't know if they did not scan on purpose an item that happened to be randomly chosen for a scan but you must check. I've on odd occasions had an item that won't scan and neither will any of the same items on the shelf scan. But on the whole, the scan is great. Scan and pack as you shop and pay at the till and whoosh you're out rather than hanging around in a queue or having to load onto checkout and then having to load back again.

On the few occasions we had to use self scan it never gave the correct change, think most are card payments now, we don't use them.

Sainsbury's like other shops seem to be pushing people towards Self Checkout and Self Scan. This could be due to problems with recruitment (they probably didn't open a new aisle because there wasn't a trained member of staff available) or it could be because they want more people doing 'big shops' to get them delivered.The outline design of the new store shows a substantially reduced car park so it will probably not see catering to people with trolleys wanting a cashier to scan their purchases as a priority.

Sainsbury's in Chiswick needs to wake its ideas up.I spent 40 mins in a trolley queue with several other folks,despite three of us asking politely if they could open another till or two as there was only one in operation.Might as well have been talking ourselves with the responces we received.

I was told a few years ago that when Lend Lease owned the building they declined to sell to Sainsbury's and the design, which was largely adopted by Great Marlborough Estates, didn't have provision for the level of deliveries at the rear of the retail units that would allow for a supermarket. That is why Sainsbury's went back to the drawing board for its redevelopment with the store remaining on the same site.

I suppose Sainsburys could always move into the new ground floor of Empire House, as I think was the original plan, while their existing tumbledown building is redeveloped.

Yep Chiswick opening turns out to be Chiswick in Australia  and Kensington turns out to be Kensinogton in Liverpool I think the idea of Aldi on CHR is zero.To meke it work it would have to be close but on a trading estate or something similar.

Sadly we are unlikely to get an Aldi. These kind of stories come from clickbait press releases issued to get the brand talked about. A major supermarket chain would have a property team who would constantly be looking at possible sites and estate agents don't need to be reminded that they get a fee if they find one. Interesting to speculate what will be going into the ground floor of Empire House though. If the retail space was presented as a single unit it looks as though it could accomodate a decent sized store although the developer would probably not want it to be an Aldi or a Lidl.
