Reading through this thread - seems to point to a lot of misconceptions not only about MPs but also local authorities and the roles that each play in our daily lives. Really very few of us get properly engaged unless we join any political party and learn how things work - or not. There's good case here for 'Civics', or call it whatever suits - to be taught in schools. These things are so important - and people dismiss this as just 'politics' - it is so much more than that, nearly every facet of our daily lives is affected by these things, be it from street lighting, to our parks or collecting our refuse to taxes, the NHS, Police and other emergency services and the laws that govern us all. We need to understand how they are funded, run and by whom, and what we can expect and if we aren't satisfied what we can realistically do to change things.
