I'm going to be renting my house out soon; can anyone recommend an agent that they're happy with?

David is right. Most of the offices of larger chains in Chiswick are essentially there for advertising and they have very few staff based locally. The people handling your sale or letting will probably have no connection with the area. It is not a coincidence that all of the agents recommended on this thread so far are locally based companies who have very high quality staff.

My understanding is that a number of the larger firms of agents (which form the majority in Chiswick) have centralised their management. It seems unlikely to me that someone based in another part of London will know the property let alone get off their **se to go and look at a problem. They just send a contractor and rely on what they are told. What they are told is often wrong and the quote is inflated

I let mine through Dexters a few years ago. I would say that if you are renting out a property put it in the hands of more than one agent and see who comes back with the best potential tenant.  They all have a tendency to promise the world but in the end they need to get people into see your property. Take it from there.

I let my property through Whitmans and have found them to be excellent

I used to manage property and the hardest thing is to find someone who when something needs doing will spend your money as if it is their own. I have worked with many people in the past and most just accept the first quote without thought. I never did that.Speak to Russell Savage at Whitmans. Apart from having the attitude I have just described, in my view he will give you the best lettings advice, even if you decide not to use him.

I'd recommend Andrew Nunn, who we've used both for letting property and selling my father's house

If it's located in W4, I recommend Harpers of Chiswick. I've used them for a number of years without issues.
