Fines for engine idling in EALING

I'm embarrassed to have voted Labour in EalingThe two Councillors just love themselves in a photoshoot.Local Authorities were granted enforcement powers on this well over 20 years ago by EU devolved through  Govt.  indeed I saw a poster in the Central library in Ealing regarding this.. when I contacted Ealing on the subject I was told it was not possible for traffic wardens or other on street employees to enforce this as it was not written into the contract. the posters were merely a sign posting exercise as funding not available

Council vehicles are often guilty of idling . Police cars also guilty. CCTV camera cars, I believe have to idle for the cameras to work, or say they say if caught idling

..but defrosting is parking so idling is not allowed, particularly if you’re out of the vehicle scraping the windscreen, while queuing at Mortlake level crossing could be said to be ‘in traffic’.  Increasingly modern cars deal with this themselves by shutting off the engine automatically, but I assume they’re wired up differently so they don’t switch off the lights and other things.

My understanding is that one can defrost, which is reasonable but sitting are Mortlake level crossing for 20 mins is not, which also makes sense.

Drivers should be aware that if you switch off the engine in some older vehicles, the power steering and hydraulic brakes are deactivated, as well as it turning off the lights - as well as the heating and the radio! The Highway Code seems to forbid idling when parked but says 'it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic'. So no more running the engine to defrost a windscreen!

Yes but what is more pathetic is the Lib Dem response....Councillor Gary Malcolm, Liberal Democrat Leader of the Opposition, said, “These idling fines will hit hard pressed residents in their pockets"

It has taken far too long for this enforcement.  It is especially noticeable outside schools where parents are waiting for their children and where there are often notices.  That should be easy to enforce.

Pathetic isn't it. No excuse not to turn your engine off while stationery. Ealing has a dreadful recordof letting incomplete contracts including hiring a refuse collection company whose vehicles were too big to get down some of the older, smaller streets and then having to bale them out by covering the cost of leasing new vehicles.Costigan though, loves her photo opportunity.
