GARDEN Waste

We are encouraged by the Council to maintain front gardens rather than cement over them for cars but it then charges those, that do this, to take away the resulting garden waste which it later sells as compost. Surely this is unfair?

I also know people who have made arrangements to share a collection (and costs).  Don't forget there are also costs in running all these services!I personally was very sad that this solution to mitigating the costs of running Council services was suggested to all Councils by Consultants as I feel it not only discouraged the home composting that many were doing which creates compost to improve their garden soil but also encouraged the paving/concreting over of gardens which increases water run off and flooding.  Adding compost to your garden soil and growing trees and shrubs can also absorb more rain when it falls as well.

Well I do have 2 compost bins but I still have a lot of garden waste that cant be composted.  I have also made a garden on my flat roof which benefits of course from lots of sunshine which I recommend to any one else who has one, as it is a pleasure to be up there and also helps to reduce runoff.
