Perhaps you should gen up on some history. The Sykes Picot Agreement and Balfour Declaration for instance.Stop allowing yourselves to be drawn into the 'them' and 'us' trap and learn some more about the First World War and who was fighting and dying in it for this country and why - for instance the Bikaner Camel Corps might surprise you.  There are some in this country trying to deliberately create even further division.We have become used to many of those killed in the services in recent wars being repatriated to Brize Norton but in WW1 that didn't happen. Many monuments were paid for by the relatives and were and are somewhere to go to remember loved ones as there was and still is no grave.  In fact just recently there have been some WW1 and WW2 reburials as every so often some remains are found and may now be identified and a service held with members of their families and the relevant (or nearest) regiment.  You could check out the CWGC website.Violence breeds more violence.

The last few posts on this thread demonstrate the silo mentality that both sides of the debate have constructed for themselves.The Israeli-Palestinian war, goes back 75 years and has always been a war about existence or maybe non-existence.  Arab/Palestinian side want to erase Israel from the map and have always had support from the far left (not just of UK politics) who consider the creation of Israel to be the last hurrah of western colonialism and therefore wrong.  By erasing Israel from the map they also intend/mean to "erase" the lives of thousands of Jews - which no doubt they consider a convenient bonus.But Israel is not blameless either.  For most of the last 75 years they have been actively trying to eliminate the very concept of Palestine and Palestinian people - at least from the territory they control.  The actions of Israeli settlers in the Western Bank are clear evidence of seeking to eliminate the concept of Palestine and those actions have been supported by the Israeli government for too long.IMO the war will never end until such time as both sides accept the other has a right to exist.  Until then any period of peace is nothing more than a temporary pause in hostilities.  True peace will require both sides to make painful sacrifices of position: Israel will need to dismantle many settlements, Palestinians will need to abandon the right of return - although there will be a lot more than that

Israel has now dropped leaflets on southern Gaza towns, ordering evacuation. To where? Many people have aready been displaced from northern Gaza. Is Israel trying to push them into Egypt (always assuming Egypt will let them in - which seems unlikely).ICRC Rule 129:  Parties to a non-international armed conflict may not order the displacement of the civilian population, in whole or in part, for reasons related to the conflict, unless the security of the civilians involved or imperative military reasons so demand.

As far as we can tell from the news reports, the IDF are not indiscriminately massacring Gaza civilians in the ground fighting, unlike the Hamas terrorists when they attacked the music festival and nearby kibbutzim. It is tragic that thousands of Gaza civilians have died from the bombing and air strikes, but if that is believed to be the only way to eliminate the terrorists of Hamas, what viable alternative is there ?

As I understand the reason for the UK Govt policy, any ceasefire would be used by Hamas to rearm and would simply result in prolonging conflict.Whether you or I agree with the rationale, it is logical and not unreasonable.The problem with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is that ultimately Hamas, and given that Hamas is the Palestinian government, that means that the Palestinian nation, has as one of its core beliefs that Israeli should be completely destroyed.  For them any ceasefire, any peace agreement, is nothing more than a temporary pause to allow them to regroup to achieve their ultimate aim.Sadly, this has the feeling of a conflict that cannot end until one side or the other is utterly destroyed

Because the Israelis are friends and allies. We must stand by them and acknowledge their right to self-defence, even if that involves the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians as collateral damage (or perhaps as a deliberate policy of state terror?). Our government should be ashamed. It is much more eager to suppress protest in this country and to distance itself from Gutierrez's honest comments than to speak truth to the Israeli government.
