Chinese in Chiswick

There seems to be a lot of Chinese folk moving to Chiswick… why the sudden influx… local schools…?

Perhaps moving upmarket. There are sizeable Chinese communities around Brook Green where there are  churches used by the Chinese Christian community.

Lots of people downsizing from Chelsea and Kensington and snapping up bargains in Chiswick. If you've just sold a gaff in Kensington for £12mill then a nice little £5mill pounder on the river is a steal.

I think I know the answer although someone has already beaten me to it. They are not Chinese. They are HongKongers. And yes, they are fleeing from Hong Kong - I know many of them. They live nearby: Hammersmith, Ealing, Richmond and Brentford. Some also live in Chiswick. Those that can afford to live in Chiswick, they tend to be middle class and adults in professional jobs. If you believe they behave in ways which are not appropriate, do let me know. I will share it in their forums. I sometimes go to facebook page set up by the Hongkongers on how to drive in the UK. It's hilarious.

Well there have always been a lot of Chinese and I believe Japanese goingback to the 1870s around Acton, Ealing, Chiswick areas there are manydescendants living in these areas, I do believe my Great great orGreat great great grandmother was part Chinese Anni Lee or Ani Linot sure of the spelling or if that is Chinese or Japanese name.

You're right Janice - many people have no or little knowledge of their own family history.  DNA testing is now able to show much more information now - and is bound to surprise a lot of people considering how secretive many people can be!

Yes, strange thing is I always liked Chinese people before I knew so something was at play there but never really knew any Japanese.  It'sreally interesting if you are able to talk to elders in your families you couldfind out lots about family history otherwise as you say DNA

I'm trying t pass on info to younger members of the family, addressesrelatives have lived all around those areas also where they are buried, I know the later ones are at Mortlake, If you do ask any church about burials they can charge you for the information.

Safe to say that Anni Lee or Ani Li is of Chinese not Japanese origin.  Think Ang Lee, the Taiwanese film director.  You could be related, Janice!

Might have mistaken us as we are Koreans and have lived in Chiswick for Yonks! over the years it's interesting how people perceived us. Japanese back in the 80's and 90's, Hong Kong in the 2000's, the Chinese in the 2020's!

How can one not tell between the three.Very obvious to meMy brother i believe was the first to addopt from china when they changed the law in 1992 allowing  foreigners to adopt its orphans.They addopted 2 orphans and were filmed and interviewed by trevor philips for The London Programme back in the 90s.

The distinguished Chinese pianistFou T'song once lived in Chiswick.Classical music lovers may recall his popularity when playing Mozart Concertos.He died of Covid in 2020 aged 86.My understanding is that he lived quietly in Staveley Road ...backing onto Chiswick House Grounds and next to the Burlington Lane junction.An early settler!

Before taking a DNA test make sure you know if the information is to be spread worldwide. Maybe discuss with family first. I know of someone given a DNA test as a Christmas present. The next thing they knew they had a whole new set of relations they knew nothing about.
