I'm having a bit of a clear out and have a few small non-functioning electrical items. Is there anywhere in Chiswick that I can put them for recycling? As I understand it, Hounslow residents can leave them with their weekly collection but I live in Ealing and they don't take them.

Ealing residents can use Brent waste and recycle centre. I take my electrical waste there. You need to make an appointment, but during the week it's usually empty. Much nicer than going to Greenford.

I'm afraid that's not true Jim.You have an opinion there is a difference between card and cardboard: this is an opinion which is not shared by anybody in the recycling industry. This is why we do separate paper (which has a higher value and is recycled in the UK) from cardboard which has inadequate recycling capacity in the UK and is generally exported.Hounslow's recycling service has an outstanding record for the purity of its recycling material which allows us to sell our material consistently well above normal market prices.

It depends where you are going. B&Q take small electricals and PC World will give you £5 off whatever electrical you are buying - but that is like entering some sort of time warp and you can leave exhausted and without half of whatever you went in for!

Thanks so muxh.

Better than disposing of electrical items is to repair them!On the Recycling thread I've put info on the Kew and Chiswick events where you need to be involved yourself in learning or helping with mending your electrical items. In Hounslow you can place small electrical items in a carrier bag and putting them out with your recycling. You can also arrange a collection for unwanted clothing and unwanted small electricals by TRAID.What can go in a collection depends on what each contractor is willing to take as part of that collection.

If you're happy to travel ...jump on a 281 bus at Hounslow Bus Garage and jump off in Whitton (Admiral Nelson Pub)A large car park behind the Pub, Iceland and Lidls contains a wonderful recycling facility run by Richmond Council. There's a large dedicated Container tsolely for used electrical items. You'll get great satisfaction using the facility which requires no booking, and is accessible 24 hours daily.I find Hounslow's recycling has many shortcomings ... whatever the Reclycling Supremo (Cllr Guy Lambert) says.He has admitted to me that he doesn't know the difference between PAPER, CARDand CARDBOARD. Hence the applalling contamination in many skips.

https://www.hounslow.gov.uk/info/20128/household_recycling_and_waste_collections/1601/small_electrical_and_electronic_appliance_recycling"We can collect unwanted small electrical appliances (e-waste) weekly on your kerbside collection day. Please place these items in a clearly marked carrier bag, alongside your recycling boxes. All electrical leads need to be contained inside the bag as well as all batteries removed - if it is not presented this way our collection team will not collect the electrical items."There are also recycling locations, I know there is one outside Brentford Fountain Leisure centre on the S Circular section of Chiswick High Rd.

So just to clarify, what is the best way to dispose of unwanted small electrical items in the borough of Hounslow. Many thanks
A generous offer from Elizabeth! Also check out Curry's and PC World and Tesco and other large retailers as they are not all insisting on like for like for purchases.https://www.recycleyourelectricals.org.uk/how-to-recycle-electronics/retailer-take-back/ The above website also gives some guidance on removing personal information from your electronics.

Anita, I would be happy to help you out. The Hounslow collection is today, Wednesday and generally they come between 11am and 12 noon.I will be taking the dog for a walk in an hour or so and could meet you by the memorial bench by The church - St. Michael’s. Would that help?

Ealing has some kerbside electrical recycling banks. They do not take large items.https://www.ealing.gov.uk/info/201171/recycling_services/1781/electrical_and_electronic_items_recyclingAlso check out the Council TRAID collection deal - and you may be able to share that with a friend.Make sure that you are not chucking out cables that have just become detached from something that you'll want them for later! (Label any new cables.)Find a friend in LBH and ask. I used to do an unofficial swap of recycling.

I think that could be classed as fly tipping and is just rude. I'd be extremely annoyed if someone dumped stuff on me without agreeing it first. What if for some reason the council didn't agree to take it? What an appalling suggestion. I have booked a bulk collection from Ealing Council for a few electrical items - old printers, heaters etc. I am sure Hounslow offers the same.

That's a really good suggestion. Does anyone disagree that it wouldn't be anti-social to leave a small bag of electrical items for collection with another person's stuff? What days are the collections of electrical items made in the Hounslow part of Chiswick?
Anita Blake ● 616d
As far as I am aware, Hounslow residents can leave a plastic bag full of small items on top of their other refuse for collection. You would just need to walk down a road and leave your items on with a resident's other stuff. I'm sure nobody would mind.

Thanks for your responses. They are small and beyond repair. I'd rather not drive anywhere with them as that would somewhat detract from the point of recycling in the first place.
The West London Waste Authority dumps will take them (Greenford for Ealing, Space Waye for Hounslow, Townmead for Richmond) They will take stuff from any West London area resident (ie Ealing, Hounslow, Richmond)

If there's a chance they can be fixed then it might be worth taking them to the British Heart Foundation shop in West Ealing Broadway. They have experts there as they have to check all electrical stuff brought in for safety.
