Laptop

My wife's laptop has suddenly packed up. Blank, black screen. Her mobile phone however, can still be charged up from the laptop. The 2 blue and orange lights at the bottom of the screen are still on as per usual. Tried turning it off/on, but still the same. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be, and how to remedy it? Thanks.

Connect it to an external screen.  This will diagnose if you have just a laptop screen issue or something more fundamental. Does sound like just the screen has gone.

Yes, put a lead into a monitor and see. Friend had similar issues but it was drive failure - he took it to the shop near Sainsbury’s, where they managed to get all the data off his hard drive in time and gave him a backup. All for a very reasonable price.

Try this in order1. Press the power button until the laptop shuts down. Press the button again to reboot. It may be that the screen driver was corrupted and failed to load.2. If 1. does not work then do try an external monitor as suggested.3. If both of these fail, There is a fantastic young chap named Sunny Bhatia, lauded almost daily on the Ealing Facebook groups, who will collect it and fix it for you. When my Lenovo wouldn't come on and had been fine the day before I googled it.  Advice was to take a paperclip or one of those little prongs you use to open a mobile phone sim tray and look for a little hole at the back of the laptop (like the one routers have on the side).  Insert the prong for a few seconds.  Hey presto, it worked, laptop reset itself (no data lost) and immediately started working.  Worth a try if you have no support guarantee or don't want to wait until they are working tomorrow if they aren't today.
