Japanese Knotweed

Read this with interest (front page) surely the best time to treat JK is late summer/early autumn after flowering? If you spray with Glysophate now it will only stunt growth not kill it.

Why is nothing done about the Knotweed between Barnes and Chiswick Bridges. Its been growing there undisturbed for more than 30 years.

If it is beside the railway lines it may be the responsibility of Network Rail rather than the council. I found some previous press coverage that suggest Network Rail has a register of Japanese Knotweed infestations and a programme to remove them. It may be, as these plants are not near residential properties, that nobody has reported them yet.

Knotweed infests the north bank of the river for almost the entire length between Barnes and Chiswick Bridges.  You may be right, no one is bothered due to the absence of residential housing there.

It took about four years to clear that stretch of the river bank from knotweed back in the early 2000’s . After that, all that was needed was to check every year that it didn’t come back. But as usual LBH haven’t carried out the knotweed removal plan that was worked out at the time.

There are many ways that Japanese Knotweed can infest an area of land.The Japanese Knotweed that infested the river bank between Barnes Bridge and Chiswick Bridge was got rid of over 4 to 5 years in the early 2000’s.The Dukes Meadows Trust alongside Hounslow Council sort professional help from one of the leading experts at the time on the removal of JK.I believe there are only certain times of year you can spray the plants to effectively kill the plant. But once deposed of professionally as to not spread it any further by sealing the plants in bags, carried out by company’s with a relevant license to get rid of Correctly.Then you are meant to monitor the area to see if any JK grows Back. But for some reason it has come back. So whoever was meant to monitor the area, either didn’t or a machine used in a park elsewhere has mowed down the JK. Then the machine was then moved to Dukes Meadows to mow the grass and infest this area again.Or the wind has blown the ensigns from the infested river bank by Chiswick pier To the land between Barnes Bridge and Chiswick Bridge and infested that again.Well that’s my thoughts on the matter, Other’s involved might be able to give a more informed account.

I thought that there might have been fly-tipping.  Just any tiny bit of chopped up root will grow into another plant.You would have thought that there could be a good way of getting it professionally incinerated nowadays instead of just burying it even when it is wrapped in the special material required.We walked along Chiswick Mall the other day along the riverside path almost as far as Dukes Meadows and spotted a clump on the foreshore. Everywhere is now someone else's backyard.

Injection of glyphosphate into the cut stems is the best way to get rid of it. If you have any plans to sell your house though get a professional company to do it so that you can get a guarantee. Essential if you are selling. Stem injection is the best way to deal with bamboo as well. It takes a number of applications but eventually it will do the job
