This has been raised before. As the Queen of Links knows it’s all too easy to wring hands and say more should be done, but most of the problems are staring her and everyone else in the face. Those lovely iPhones are terrible for the environment in every conceivable way, from the plastic covers to the battery components to the manufacturing process to the shipping to the energy requirements to run them.Everyone consumes far too much now, particularly energy, yet I don’t see Philippa giving up her phone and online presence. Nor does anyone else. Meanwhile all those data centres are gobbling up more and more power to process the latest posting of an eight year old article.Very few people are going to change their behaviour unless it’s made illegal. That goes for driving, flying, eating the ‘wrong’ foods, or being online 24/7. And why is that? Because people tend to prefer the lifestyles they enjoy, rather than ones imposed by diktat from supposed intellectual superiors. It’s why communism doesn’t work. But even if everyone who follows these posts did everything Philippa suggests it wouldn’t make a jot of difference to the planet.
