Sadiq Khant's silent majority

I suppose Khant's silent majority in favour of cycle superhighways are not the same as the silent majority - nearly 59% of Londoners - who didn't vote at the last mayoral election - and who clearly didn't want him.

Why doesn't this leftie mayor start filling in all the horrendous holes in London's roads that are in an horrendous condition. My car is already suffering steering problems due to the appalling state of the roads. All the money this wise guy is wasting is going on silly diversity schemes and rainbow lines etc... that most decent hard working people don't give a damn about and use the money from US/WE/TAX PAYER/etc... paying Congestion Charges; ULEZ; horrible parking charges and sort the capital's disgusting road infrastructure out it's almost becoming undriveable around London and the UK.

Away from roads and stopping ULEZ. Just a thought that just came to mind If more people have to have a ULEZ compliant car,will this mean more people will be willing to drive into central london from outer london of an evening once operating times of CC stop instead of other forms of transport

That did not include ULEZ for say people of Biggin Hill or orpington for example. Live in sevenoaks and drive 20 mins to work in Orpington or drop kids off at school,not anymore if your car is not ULEZ compliant.

Great for the health of people in Orpington that people will stop driving the most polluting cars in from outside London. Somehow I think Sevenoaks drivers will survive.

I have absolutely no issue with the most polluting vehicles being removed from London's roads for the benefit of all. However, this tax raising, rather than environment improving, con by Khan bases its entire charging structure on the age of the vehicle rather than the amount of pollution it generates.  As example, a brand new gas guzzling 'supercar' can generate up to four times the emissions of a ten year old Diesel fitted with a particulate filter yet pays no ULEZ charge. The technology in the form of ANPR cameras exists to make charging accurate but the  apology for a Mayor  lacks both the will and wisdom. I am unaffected by ULEZ as a driver just to be clear.

Each council is responsible for potholes. Not Khan. And as I recall there were many potholes under the rightie mayor we had before but he was far too busy using our money to fund his then bit on the side.

You tax the thing you want less of, whether that's pollution or congestion or smoking. It doesn't get much fairer than polluters paying to pollute, and given that we all breathe and get sick from the toxic air they force on us, I don't have a lot of sympathy for a polluter who demands a free ride.

The issue is that the most polluting, in the shape of new gas guzzlers, like the one in which Khan is chauffered, pay no ULEZ whereas those with modern, by comparison, clean Diesels are penalised.  Nothing at all 'fair' about that and therefore, from your statement that you then have no sympathy for Khan.

No, I didn't argue that high emissions cars that are newer shouldn't be taxed.  I believe that they should be (and VED does already tax higher CO2 emissions).No, I didn't say anything about Khan's car and I believe that high emissions cars should be highly taxed regardless of who is in it.  You said that "Khan bases its entire charging structure on the age of the vehicle rather than the amount of pollution it generates".That isn't true because ULEZ is based on the Euro 4/6 emissions standards - i.e. the amount of pollution a vehicle generates.  At some point ULEZ will be based on Euro 7 and that will capture emissions from petrol, diesel and electric vehicles as well.Anybody who pollutes should pay.  I don't think I can say it more clearly than that NV.

You have fallen into the trap of assuming that only Euro 6 Diesels meet emissions and NOX standards whereas the truth is that many vehicles, notably most VW Common Rail engines were already Euro-6 compliant before the standard was finalised. Hence the rush at the moment to acquire certificates of conformity which list is the actual emissions rather than those based on some arbitrary date which is what Khan has done for ULEZ. TfL has yet to decide whether to accept a COC despite the engine meeting 5he required emissions levels.

Interesting take on democracy, those who didn't vote didn't want the elected leader....  Some people just can't accept that the Tories lined up 2 abysmal candidates in a row for the last few Mayoral elections. Further Bailey based his campaign on removing cycling lanes, ULEZ etc (remember the cute video of him driving in a Ford fiesta to central London).  He lost that fight.
