Prior to the 2019 decision on C9, myself and some others did extensive analysis of about 430 collisions involving cyclists along the route of C9 along CHR and King St (this was data going back to 2005). This used police information on the details of the collision including direction of cyclist and vehicle and if there were turning movements.25% of collisions involved the cyclist and vehicle travelling in the same direction. 25% is not 'vanishingly small'. In addition, 12% of collisions involved the cyclist being 'doored' by parked cars.So a segregated lane would have prevented 37% of collisions before even considering junctions.'What Cycleway 9 does is introduce more junctions for cyclists'No it doesn't. It should be obvious that a bike lane along one side of the road means fewer junctions are passed than lanes along both sides of the road. If you are in C9, you can't be hit by a car emerging from the junction of, say, Fishers Lane and CHR.'there is little you can do at intersections and junctions.'Again, incorrect. Protection can be based upon separation by space and separation by time. Cycle-specific signals at the junctions of Dukes Avenue, TGT, Chiswick Lane separate cyclists and motor vehicles by time. Yes, this doesn't work if one or other vehicle run a red light but there is only so much that can be done.The lights at Dukes Avenue can be somewhat frustrating but collisions figures show this junction, and Fishers Lane, had the highest concentration of collisions along the route. The reason there are signals here is the volume of traffic using Dukes Avenue as a rat-run to the A4.For unsignalled junctions there are several standard design approaches that can be used to reduce probability of collisions. There is lots of research that has been done on this to actually put figures on the safety improvements compared to junctions with no design changes.The design changes have already been mentioned. Offset the track from the road to provide separation with turning traffic, put the track on a raised surface to slow down the vehicle before it crosses the track, build outs to tighten the turning radius of the vehicle to slow it down before turning and ensure it crosses the track at 90 degrees with the driver looking ahead rather than swinging into a turn at an angle.You mention vehicles emerging from side roads several times, however the biggest danger is from vehicles entering side roads. Along CHR/King St there were *seven* times more collisions from vehicles entering side roads than emerging. This should be obvious. When a vehicle is entering a side road it may be doing this at speed and swinging into a turn while when emerging, it is more likely to be doing this at slow speed or from a stop.It isn't a surprise there are more collisions at Weltje which is one way from King St than Rivercourt, which is one way to King St.As has been mentioned, LBH&F have implemented none of the design measures that can reduce probability of collisions at Weltje and Rivercourt. The report accompanying the decision to make the bike lane permanent has recognised the issue. They now need to do something quickly.
