I wear varifocals and you will know how bloody expensive they are, however, like bi-focals I think their efficiency really depends on the measurements of where the change in the distance and close up parts of the lenses is situated in relation to your sight. I once had a pair that were really off centre where I was looking and everything looked as if it were rising up to meet me! Made me feel nauseous. It wasn't the prescription, it turned out to be where the placing of the centre had been manufactured. So personally although they seem cheaper online - I can't see how they can centre them properly if you're not there, and it also depends on the size of the frame you pick. Certainly single vision glasses online are a good buy, anything rather more specialised might be another matter, but I just think of all the faffing around if they aren't right for you.
