What a scorcher!

Boots in Chiswick this morning and the Nat West branch in Ealing Broadway this afternoon. Both uncomfortably hot, not warm. Had the misfortune to queue up behind a donut depositing all the coins in W5 given how long he was there. Also, going to Chiswick Park, can someone tell me why the station platform lights are always on regardless of time of year, come dark or brilliant sunshine? Ditto South Ealing station in the height of summer and even on a day when the station was shut for an RMT strike! No wonder the little pillock Khan is always out with the begging bowl if locally is replicated across the network all year!

Believe it or not the UK could be exporting electricity to France which has the potential to have a knock on effect to all of us. Electricity is a market commodity and therefore can be bought by who is prepared to pay the most.France may have many nuclear power stations but they ageing with a good number out of commission. Strike action compounding the situation.If power is sold to France we may have a shortage and have to  resort to contingency plans including firing up older coal powered  stations.The OP has a good point which some people have yet to grasp.

There is some irony in householders being urged to reduce power usage, with financial incentives offered to boost take up, yet many large businesses don’t seem capable of the same. Still, Boots and NatWest will be handy warm hubs for the needy as they traverse CHR.

They can keep warm of a night at Zizzi, without going in. They leave the outside heaters on even when there are no tables outside - a scandalous waste of energy.

Peter,  much as I agree about the heat in some shops or business,  the problem is likely to be that you've walked in with a big coat from the cold outside and you immediately feel very warm.    The people who work there are sitting down for long periods of time in their work clothes and probably feel cold.  I find that when I walk into my house after a walk in the early evening,  it immediately feels very warm,  even when the heating is off.  Wasting energy is never good,  but a difficult balance to keep the employees warm,  while also not roasting the customers.

I was well insulated against the cold but the heat was still unbearable in both places. Still I daresay we'll be picking up the bill in one way or another. In reference to the reply from Mr Richard Head, I was pointing out that tfl wastes an awful lot of energy on its outside tube stations which is shameful when his Lordship goes cap in hand so often blaming everyone else for their finances when he is sitting on top of the pile!

Marks & Spencer in Richmond far too hot to shop for clothes. Makes shopping a very unpleasant experience. Have written to the HQ as well as Tesco and TKMaxx  (Kew) because the heat is unbearable. Can’t understand why these companies are wasting energy.  Lidl St Margarets also far too hot.  ASDA have the right balance.  Little wonder why Amazon is doing so well when High Street shops make shopping so unpleasant.

It’s appalling and shop and office staff need to be educated to understand the energy crisis and the environmental impact. It should not be permitted for any business to heat its premises above 18 degr C but preferably to 14/15 degr which is quite adequate. The government of course needs to lead by example by enforcing rules in all government buildings and local authority premises.

According to the Government website about working conditions:'There’s no law for minimum or maximum working temperatures, eg when it’s too cold or too hot to work. However, guidance suggests a minimum of 16ºC, or 13ºC if employees are doing physical work. There’s no guidance for a maximum temperature limit.'

I don't like socks but when out my ankles felt really icy so bought some ankle warmers they keep me warm can put them over the top of ankle boots if you don't like socks.

I've been objecting to these outdoor heaters for ages (as you might expect) although we wanted to eat outside (and did in our coats and hats).  Perfectly OK then and not as cold! What I discovered at Bill's in Ealing (sadly no longer there) was that all the heaters on the outside had to be on at the same time and not just the one in use.  I believe some businesses may use these to try and attract customers but as seen here they can also irritate and put off potential customers.In pubs some of these which can be turned on by customers sitting underneath them are on timers which is good as there are customers who just get up and walk away without turning them off.  They also have to be turned on and off from a main switch inside.We all need to be much more thoughtful - especially while there is the threat of power cuts still hanging over all of us.

Sorry Janice,  I missed your questions (my memory isn't as good as it was).  I believe men and women do feel cold differently.  I was in a restaurant yesterday where they definitely weren't heating for people who were sitting around for hours.  I think it's a really difficult balance to get the heating right.  I don't know who's in control of the heating in shops,  but I doubt they have anyone dedicated to it.

It can be very hot just going into some shops or restaurants as they have a heater over the door.  I couldn't breathe in one of these and walked straight out again.  However I discovered later that if you go much further into the building it is a lot cooler.  So it is not always as hot as you think.There are also what are called air curtains over doors.  I don't know what or how much difference there is between them or how much they can be controlled or how much they are used.
