Sale of The Crown

W4.com has a story today about the sale of The Crown. It manages to miss the most important part - that this building was once the site of Chiswick Police Station. When the station was sold, the cells inside were retained. I haven't been to The Crown since the 2017 refurbishment and maybe the cells went then. Or maybe they are still in place? Now, of course, there is no police station in Chiswick...

I remember being kept in the cells overnight in the old police station that's now the Crown, after a QPR v Chelsea match at Loftus Road in the late 60s. We Chelsea boys gave the QPR gorillas a right good kicking, and there wasn't enough room in the Hammersmith pc station to accommodate us all.Anyway, I'm not surprised they need to sell it. It's hopelessly overpriced, though the staff are very nice people.

I thought that the style of the premises under "CARVOSSO'S" reign was very impressive. It was terrific. A proper Manor in the middle of Chiswick.A great wine bar atmosphereThe sight of beer swilling patrons on the pavement tables under The Crown cap looked ghastly.Sad that CARVOSSO'S is no more ...but fantastic that it happened.

What I was told by someone involved with commercial property in the area is that the original purchase was highly leveraged and it never really met its revenue targets. With interest rates rising, there is no choice but to sell so that the original lenders can get some of their money back.It will be hard to shift as the hospitality business will be really tough. My source said that the most likely buyer would be Fuller's who have the cash. It isn't ideal for them with the George IV across the road but if they wait it out they should be able to get it cheap.

I know people who visited the premises including family and friends but stopped after the change and have never returnedIm also told that another premises that has had a facelift down the road has suddenly lost a lost of customers for various reasons

They tell  you we bring ur drinks over and then charge you 20% for itWithout telling you in the first place .£ 1 for tab water if it’s in the fridge.No charge if the run the tap.💁💁💁

This "outrageous" service charge is common in many, if not all licenced premises. It is worth remembering that no one is obliged to pay it.Regarding the sale of the Crown, the owners didn't help themselves by taking far too long to get the place up and running, and when they did, lo and behold, China unleashed covid 19 on W4 and the rest of civilisation.Events have proved the undoing for the Crown: many hope the new owners have better luck and maybe bring a bit of the magic Huh Barratt's Carvasso's had.The building itself, the back forecourt, and the front room have style (but not the street furniture degrading the High road).Here's hoping the change of ownership happens soon and the present staff are not discarded.
