Update in today's newsletter says that Hounslow Highways filled the hole with concrete yesterday and it will have set by 1pm at which point it will reopen. It isn't marked as closed on Google Maps anymore but someone may have jumped the gun.

Have to say, I was surprised that it was a simple matter of pouring concrete down the hole. There must be an underlying cause which hopefully has been properly investigated rather than just being buried.
12 pm update, CHR Eastbound cars are quiet, Westbound traffic non-existant, Chiswick High Road junction westbound is still no-go. Have to use TGT is you want westbound.

I've just returned from a walk which included CHR/TGT/Chiswick Lane. Traffic is flowing in both directions on CHR past the ex-sink-hole site, including buses. Google Maps still shows it closed westbound, but I've told them it's now open.

That's good to hear other that the Google Maps confusion - it was shown as being open on Sunday morning when it was still closed. I was reading a report about the 'Clean Air Neighbourhoodss' planned in Hammersmith and Fulham and the council said that one of the things they learned from the trial scheme in South Fulham was better interaction with Sat Nav providers. It shouldn't be down to members of the public to keep these things up to date and it is a cheap and easy way for the council to reduce congestion.

Just buried, is the usual and best option. Anything for a quick fix, knowing it'll cost 10 times as much when they need to deal with it again in the near future. It's how Britain functions.

Maybe they need to survey first with ground piercing radar as the cycle lane construction doesn't just involve a quick resurface.Deep trenches are dug which appear to accommodate new pipes and concrete pots roughly three feet diameter by the same depth. What they are for is a mystery to me.

Perhaps the dilemma is that ground penetrating radar would reveal problems that they would be obliged to fix but wouldn't have the budget to do so. There are probably lots of long forgotten streams that have been submerged under the High Road plus consistent leaks from water mains could mean that the sub surface is increasinly compromised. If you deal with the sinkholes as they appear it is probably a bit cheaper than actively seeking out danger spots and fixing them in advance.

The council may be taking a calculated risk. To be fair - if the money is not available to repair any voids that are found by a survey - what choice does the council have other than to cross its fingers?
