Modern day Britain.

"A 19-year-old student was stabbed to death in Manchester on Wednesday night"."Rowan Thompson, who identified as non-binary and used the pronoun ‘they’, was days away from standing trial for murder".“The home of 16-year-old Camron Smith was entered by a masked, gloved and knife-carrying group and there they brutally killed that young man"."Sentences continually downgraded as there is no prison space and no Police on our streets"."Members of an Albanian drug gang beat a man to death using weapons including a baseball bat, brick and bamboo stick after he tried to steal from their cannabis factory, a court has been told".I suppose this is modern day society and we should just accept it as such? Or am I missing something? You can find loads more similar examples.

You do like to alarm, don't you, Brian? I seem to remember that you have previously posted similar anecdotal evidence about violent crime. The fact is that, despite the serious underfunding of the judicial system and the reduction of police numbers in the meantime, violent crime has declined over the past quarter of a century.

Yep, never hear of anyone getting stabbed these days. Thank goodness for graphs and Sadiq Khan 👍 Reports of close passes up  by one million percent. Are they violent crimes? Wait until cyclists are registered, boys on bikes etc.

How about the modern day world where China has over 1000 coal-fuelled power stations, footballers earn £865k a week, social-media 'influencers' go to Iran against travel advice leading to their government having to rescue them, and sporting organisations and clubs lap up money/stage events in countries which assassinate critics and slaughter their own population for daring to disagree ?.Humans, what terrible creatures we are.

Thanks for the info. Very interesting that crime has reduced so much. Makes sense that we don’t need so many police anymore. Perhaps the new austerity measures to be implemented by Rishi and Hunt will address the overstaffing and generous pay packages and pension payouts for the police services.

To all those decrying the way modern day Britain has "gone to the dogs" etc, I would suggest that they read some Charles Dickens.It may have been fiction, but it was inspired by real life experience, including having to work himself in a rat-infested warehouse that produced bottles of liquid shoe polish.He was 12 at the time, and this was necessitated by having to help his family pay their way, following his father's incarceration in a squalid prison for the the "crime" of falling into debt.

'Makes sense that we don’t need so many police any more.'Given that only 5% of crimes lead to an arrest and prosecution, maybe we should save money by doing away with the Police as it would apparently make so little difference?

Your post takes the prize for rude and uninformed, or perhaps deliberately misleading, criticism. The caveats to which you refer relate to the last two years, during which data collection has been affected by the pandemic, but in no way do they cast doubt on the overall post-94 trend, as shown in the graph posted by Michael Robinson. I don't understand why this is such a polemical issue for you. Could it be just because  you're on the opposite side in the great cycle war?
