Idiots does not adequately describe their appalling criminal act, I am sure they think they have social justice on their minds. How then can the justify attacking a piece of iconic art that is made available to everyone to view for free.

Matthew, I think the iconic art is irrelevant. These folks see fit to ruin the property of others (the petrol tank in Brentford) and glue themselves to this, that and the other. Or sit on the M4 or wherever disrupting the lives of those going about their business.Why haven't they simply sat down in front of Shell headquarters or BP or whatever and blocked access to their conducting business as usual? Aren't these companies, in part, who the messages are meant for? Or the government? They think they're being clever but as mentioned, they only seem to be idiots.

How philistine can thsse people get? You'd have thought they could have chosen a masterpiece infinitely less boring than than the one they did. The appreciation of art has obviously gone to pot. I blame the Tories.

Absolutely crazy the 2 girls looked like students their parents will be so ashamed not the way to go about any protest….they should be thrown in a cell for weeks to teach them that we live in a society, peaceful protest is fine but vandalism is not 😂😂😂

One report on the BBC said that although the frame was damaged, the painting was behind glass, so protected. Let's hope they're right.

Or it shows a nicely judged appreciation of the likely effect of their protest, namely that it would wind up the harrumphing classes and gain lots of publicity without causing any damage to the painting.

They are not interested in what people say against them. They dont listen and they dont answer awkward questions.Yesterday they were not sure if to move to allow an ambulance past in fear of not getting back in the road as they were ordered to make way by the police after sitting down. They just about made a narrow path that the ambulance had to work its way past very slowly in order not to run any of them over.The only person for them is a judge.

I think they do know what they are doing and it comes as a result of what Govt has not been doing in allowing the Oil and Gas companies to keep their unprecedented windfalls (most countries have taxed them including Russia) even when they have asked to be taxed, and is threatening to do now with starting drilling many more wells and re-starting fracking when there has been a moratorium...  It is Just Stop Oil and it is all there on their website.

Problem here is that they’re enemies of civil society and abuse the liberties that this entails. The solution could become one of amending ‘Section 50 of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 to include publicly owned or displayed artworks’ as one self described ‘hand wringing liberal’ described it. Then we all lose. In any event, we need to stop these over-privileged numpties debasing art works, and the public sphere.

The point they were trying to make with the soup was how some people who are struggling at the moment can't even afford to heat up a can of soup due to energy prices

You're worried that we'll all lose more freedom?  By denying, ignoring and by not dealing with increasing underlying problems don't you think even greate problems are being created?The naming of the protest groups Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil couldn't be clearer or shorter in their message.  It's surely a result of all the lack of action and greenwashing going on with regards to climate change.

I saw this again on Sunday and for those who were worried about the glass, it is now clean and the linseed oil based paint used in the beautiful painting completely unaffected.Iam just glad there wasn't a 2nd course and dessert to follow.
