Last time I found a bank card, I put it in an envelope saying where I found it and handed it in at the relevant bank.  Not everyone reads this forum.

Bank advice is cut it in two and ring them. In reverse order.

Maybe it’s been used fraudulently already, hence the bank advice is always cut it in two and report as lost.

If the thief intends to further use the card offline (if possible) then they would presumably already have all the necessary details and so destroying the physical card would achieve nothing.And while the physical card is in secure possession of the finder no further activity can take place. So why cut it up ? This maybe a gimme for somebody, as I'm deliberately not Googling this one.michael adams

From the fact that Richard Neal hasn't got back to you *, *it's maybe not entirely unreasonable to assume* I think, that Charlotte Neal had already cancelled the card and that her father was entirely unaware of that fact, when posting. To set your mind at rest you may want to follow Russell Pearson's advice and try to cancel the card ( After waiting on hold for 30 minutes if my own fairly recent experience with supposed market leader Barclaycard, is anything to go by. Not myself having "The App". ) Only for it be confirmed that it's already been cancelled. You will probably be then instructed to cut the card in half. Presumably so as to stop it from falling into the "wrong hands"; pairs of which are presumably lurking around every corner.michael adams  * Yet another hostage to fortune

If it was lost and not reported and then used for fraud, the bank or credit card company may well cite negligence and refuse to pay. (cf Virgin Gym thefts). Even more so, if that’s admitted on social media.

And so the bank wouldn't refund anything i.e even fraudulent transactions made before Catherine Steele reported finding the card. michael adams

Just ring the number on the back of the card and ask if you can post on social media to say that you’ve found it, and see what they advise.

If recent experience is anything to go by, post-covid, that's probably an hour or two of your life  you're never going to get back, listening to a musical snippet repeated ad-nauseam, and to how important you really are to them... 

The Bank would advise not to, presumably. Because as soon as anyone responded the first time, that would be evidence in itself, that the card hadn't already been cancelled. And the banks all have eyes everywhere, as we know. Or at least they'd like us to think,

In my experience, doing the right thing and trying to call the number on the back of the card is a waste of time. You get totally mucked around by the bank you're calling — call centre don't know what to do and pass you to fraud team, who don't want to talk to you as you're not the card holder. As you say you end up burning an hour.  Better to cut in half and either give it in to a bank teller, or cut in half and bin it. Extremely unlikely it won't have been cancelled by the owner anyway.

Isn't it always nice to know that your lost card is not still floating around town somewhere?  It's still best to cancel it as you don't know how many hands it has passed through.I'm told that a lot of the hire bikes are rented using stolen cards - and then there was the nightmare that the gym user recently had.

As I do the irrelevance of my point about the help line.In mitigation I would cite a) the possibility of the loser reading a message posted on local social media in good time and b) the possibility of the owner of the card somehow finding out, and their turning up at your house and demanding their card back; resulting in possible unpleasantness following a totally unconvincing attempt on your part, to tape it back together.michael adams

Good to hear it’s been cancelled. Most people try to be helpful. But. What seems like a good honest move - just returning the card to its rightful owner, isn’t what the banks recommend. If a card is lost it’s potentially compromised so needs to be cancelled asap. The reporting phone numbers tend to respond quickly as there’s so much money lost in this way.
