Carolean

The King Charles III age is to be known as the Carolean age as the latin form of Charles is Carolus.  I don't know this , I'm just reading what an article of Sky news is telling me. I guess if you are fond of latin or a lady called Carol you might find it a delight.  I'm not sure  about it yet , I find it strange , will take a bit of getting used to.

There was a period maybe lasting until the mid 60's of forward looking optimism typoified by the "New Elibethans" supposedly mirroring the optimism of the first El;izabethans. This was kicked off by the conquest of Everest and the sub four minute mile but for me that mood is exemplified by the opening of Calder Hall nuclear power station bt the Queen in 1956 - electricity so cheap they'll have to give it away. And look at how well that one turned out. I'm pretty sure that this name originated in a newspapaer or magazine article, or series of articles at the time, as did the "Crystal Palace", "Swinging 60's", etc. However on Google this has been totally swamped by the Andrew Marr TV series of the same name from 2012. He quite possibly mantions these articles  himself at some point.But as to us "ordinary people", well possibly not.michael adams

I don't quite understand why we can't have a little break before we need to move on to having a King.  I assume it used to be important to avoid any fighting over the throne,  but it saddened me to hear people singing god save the King instead of Queen just a couple of days after she died.

That to many is the strength of having a Monarchy - everything changes - yet nothing changes - an unbroken thread. To be honest after the amount of disruption nationally with politics, a settling influence is what we all need and the time of mourning to gather our thoughts. The Queen would not have had it any other way.

I understand it's tradition,  but one that comes from a time when the accession was probably contended,  and the need to declare a new monarch quickly was a necessity.  It would be nice to have a bit of time to get used to it before we move on.

Only opening Calder Hall was the most symbolic, The same could be said of the aircraft industry, the car industry where a multiplicity of competing models was just as much to blame as Red Robbo, and where Rolls Royce and Bentley are now owned by different German firms. All our utilities are foreign owned and almost everything we buy seems to be made in China nowadays. Apart from winning the World Cup in 1966 and the success of the Beatles and Mary Quant its been basically downhill for UK.PLC for the whole of the past 70 years. So much for the "New Elizabethans", And that's not forgetting Suez. Spot on Vanessa and Susan. A little surprised that no one has yet mentioned the mayhem and confusion that followed the acclamation oath in Westminster Abbey for William The Bastard on Christmas Day 1066. An early example of how the French and English have so often failed to understand each other's languages and intentions. But didn't President Macron excel with his eulogy for QEII!

The English can’t be bothered to learn French, it’s true( or any other language.. )Your new leader pandered to Tory members by stating distrust of Macron and the French which feeds into your party’s xenophobia. Such a shift from Thatcher’s enthusiasm and leadership of the Single Market. You must be disappointed.Today in Nice, for example, all Union flags along the Promenade (des Anglais) were flying at half-mast,  apart from six Union flags either side of a huge portrait of the Queen underneath which people had placed flowers and candles.There was a gun salute at 1pm on the day that at midday there was an hour’s silence in the UK. How very old-fashioned of you to refer to someone’s parentage outside a religious ceremony as a bastard. By your own metric, there will be many bastards in Chiswick. Probably just as well you’re not standing for election any more, eh. How to alienate the electorate!

We didn’t lose her suddenly. She was 96 and frail. I’m sorry you feel her loss so keenly but she worked to the end. Carolean is fine but we didn’t call ourselves Elizabethans, I think. And I look forward to the media not saying King Charles III all the time. King Charles will do: we know who he is and how many there have been.

My sister in Oz says that they too are getting blanket coverage of all that's going on here. I am a staunch Monarchist but I do think a lot of this is overkill, covering cars going along the roads - bonkers! Then you get action replays.
