Highway Code

Are all you who use the roads putting into practice the changes in the Highway Code introduced 6 months ago? A recent survey by the AA says that 61% of people haven’t even read them. As they apply to all users of the roads almost daily best get acquainted soon. Has anyone on here read them? I’ve seen only ONE person apply ANY of the new listings: do you?

I think most people would have gleaned information from the news and forums. I find common sense works best in most situations.  Whilst certain sections of the population are being prioritised, but ignoring the HC I think a lot of people will be doing the same.  A pedestrian stepped off the pavement on the corner of Town Hall Avenue,  when the rules first changed. She looked at me about to be blocking the High Road if I stopped, I looked at her and I think we mutually  agreed it made sense for me to go. She stepped back on the pavement . Very amicable. I’ve not encountered anything similar since.

Car drivers still need to be taught and to learn that they have to take more care passing cyclists leaving them lots of room.  They should be expecting cyclists to be staying clear of parked cars so as not be doored:"1.5m is a minimum safe distance for overtaking in slow moving traffic. If you cannot allow the minimum distance, do not overtake until you can. At speeds of 30mph or above, the Highway Code recommends a car width may be needed to overtake safely."Yesterday I saw a driver who just couldn't wait and insisted on overtaking in a street narrowed by parking on the other side.This morning I saw a driver overtaking a car following a cyclist by crossing to the other side of the road and driving the wrong side of a central island. These were not busy roads but they were impatient car drivers.(On other days I have of course seen cyclists doing reckless things - but not in the last two days.)

"(On other days I have of course seen cyclists doing reckless things - but not in the last two days.)"Philippa, come to junction of Heathfield Terrace and CHR from 7am  any weekday and watch cyclists not just cycle recklessly but also illegally and downright dangerously. I witness this every morning when taking my dogs to Turnham Green for their first walk of the day.
