Soft Plastics recycling facility available at M&S Chiswick.

Diligent recyclers will be pleased  to hear that the local branch,at last, has a collecting point for soft plastics.. at the rear access to the store...where your bagged up soft plastics can be deposited.A bag of such plastics should easily be assembled by many households in a week!The good point is that M&S, we can reliably assume, will sort out unsuitable plastics (etc) and despose of it responsibly... ie in months to come it won't be floating in the Mediterranean Sea or English Channel. Up till recently only seven M&S stores in the UK tested this Scheme... the nearest to W4 being Tolworth,Surrey... and it has now been extended to dozens of M&S stores. See google.For their own reason the Chiswick Branch "hides" their Collection Point at the back door.. whereas at Tolworth the "plastics  wanted" bins are just inside the front entrance.There's a pleasant feeling when you deposit your used plastics  in this way.And when you see shoppers with their green M&S bag in hand you know you've been helping the world.There is no requirement for your plastics donation to be from an M&S products either. You can pack your delivery  in a Sainsbury or Tesco shopping bag if need be.When that UK long distance Ocean swimmer completed the challenge to swim from Cornwall to Kent ..his greatest hurdle was coping with plastics in the Sea.No excuses now. Bag it and deliver to M&S W4 back entrance.

The Co-Op has been collecting it for several months - useful for people further along Chiswick High Road or near Chiswick station. It's a brilliant initiative - and rather shocking to see just how much soft plastic was going to waste before.

Sainsbury’s has had a collection box for soft plastics for sometime at their entrance from the car park. Or is that just for carrier bags?

Sainbury's has had a collection for carrier bags and other recyclable soft plastics for years.  Most big supermarkets have had.  The addition of the Coop more recently snd now M&S is welcome.  However, useful as some plastic is in dome situations I'd still avoid it whenever possible.  There are often better options with better circular economy solutions.

That would be the same Sainsbury's who like to tell us that they are the environmentally friendly supermarket? Have a walk round the car park with the a lot of the lights in the open on all day as well as lights under the walkways.

Waitrose in Ealing also have a soft plastics collection.

The key query, and this is most  most important, how does the Commerial Recycling Contractor employed by the Supermarkets deal with CONTAMINATED bags/sacks/bins etc.?Which Supermarket would you really trust to sort foreign matter out rather than just reject your whole consignment.I trust Marks and Spencers most and will be delivering another bag to the W4 branch. Only query in my bag will be the small amount of bubble wrap. But they'll sort it I'm sure.I'm reminded of the Brentford painter and decorator who I saw wilfully dump his used paint tins, brushes and more into one of Morrison's Soft Plastic skips many years ago!The story is still on Google Search. I reported his name and address (from the van) to the Recycling  Deparment at Hounslow Council..and the executive wasn't interested. Maybe the whole skip was checked and sifted by the Council.Maybe the lot went to landfill...or to a quality uncontrolled contractor!When you next swim in the Mediterranean.....!
