W4 Private message

As it has come up a few times recently over "Did not get your PM" or "Ive sent you a PM" You once could tell if it worked by clicking on your own name and sending yourself a PM but that no longer works because the PM service does not work whatsoever on here and has not worked for ages. So dont think it could be in your spam folder or no text was put in subject line,it just does no longer work so dont expect to recieve one or send one and hope it gets delivered

If the Private Message system has indeed been axed by NeighbourNet (and I have no reason to doubt it) I find this very disappointing.  I’ve only ever used the system to send helpful or friendly messages, and those are the only type I’ve ever received.  I’m sure that’s how the vast majority of us use it.  It has been very sociably valuable over the years.  Surely it would be easy for N/Net to ban or suspend anyone who used the system to bully or abuse - which, as has been hinted, could be a reason for the closure.But if the PM system has been closed down, I think it will have a negative effect on the value of this Forum and hasten it’s decline.  I hope the system has only been temporarily suspended as it gets an upgrade but that’s probably optimistic.But I’m speculating.  Does anyone have any solid information?

Alastair, I entirely agree. However, I tend more to the cock-up theory and suspect it has just stopped working rather than been deliberately discontinued.

You could well be right, Richard.  Whatever, let’s hope it’s fixed because until it is it’s going to have a damaging effect on the forum imo.

As per Julian’s comment above, I tried to PM myself over on W3 and nothing arrived. Either same policy or same cock-up.

I wonder if this has something to do with GDPR.Then again, people like Paul Campbell regularly flout it with impunity so no telling what passes as law these days.

One would think that a service tab for one way updates and notifications would be available within the forum. Ive never ever seen any notifiction or reply on here. Not even anything about newchiswickw4

Obviously there is a need for a dead letterbox.  If we were all honourable and only collected messages meant for us, it might be a way forward.

🇺🇦Julian mentions the new (updated) Chiswickw4 website.Note there is a dot (.) after (new).Several Forum posters must be using this new version as they found the posting of images/pictures facility on it easily(?).I have endeavoured to "register" on the new platform / site but have failed. My password was asked  for..yet I've never used a password to access this older website. I'm also  told my Postcode  is incorrect..etc so my application was rejected...so I gave up.I have been posting on these local Forums for some 18 years.. and posting images/pictures was fairly easy years ago. Some may recall how we used to practice our image posting skills on the Wandsworth Forum..but no more!Recently I endeavoured  to gain access and become image active on the new Brentford equivalent. (new.brentfordtw8.com). It's listed on Google. Once again I found it unfathomable to Register.I sent an email to the Editor at Brentfordtw8 but did not receive an acknowledgement...let alone help! A pity... as I do rate Neighbour Net's activities very very highly and valuable.Perhaps I should be making contact with the Offices in Evelyn Road.Regarding  the sending of Direct Messages to Forumers.. it may be that that 'failing' facility  is not available on the new version websites at all.So there's vaguenes... we need advice and help. Some people maybe au fait with the bells and whistles... but this old fogie is stumpt!

Good advice Julian.. but ..'they' use a semi-secret word mid- sentence to reveal their status and I can't remember what that was! I did read about it in that 'Brotherhood' book.I'll pm you the WORD if I manage to recall it!
