Thermal Blinds

Considering thermal blinds to reduce the cold penetrating my side return extention glass roof (added bonus of reducing the heat in summer too).  Does anyone know how effective they are against the cold? Will need a company that also measures and fits them.  I see that "Hillary's" does offer that but have no experience of the company.  Any recommendations or companies to avoid?

How is the glass placed - is it a flat roof glass, or at an angle?

For heat conservation in winter I'd be thinking more in terms of secondary glazing of some kind which needn't be fiendishly expensive - 3mm acrylic in a lightweight frame ? As winter is also the time when you need the extra light provided by a glass roof. While for summer a roller blind for really bright days. michael adams

Plenty of choice with slanted window blinds. Flat ones are another story.

We used Hilary’s for shutters and they did an excellent job, fantastic fitter, worth getting a quote

I stand to be corrected as always. But I would have though there would be very little demand for flat glass roofs, in a domstic context at least. Given the obvious problems with bird droppings, leaves etc which would otherwise be straightaway washed away by rain* on a sloping roof. michael adams * rain water which used to fall out of the sky on a regular basis. Often at the most inconvenient time.

I bought 2 thermal blinds from Blinds to Go for 2 north facing window.  I bought and husband fitted them.  They are double pleated and fold up very neatly.  They are also good as blackout blinds and worked well.  However don’t know how the would work on non vertical window.  Perhaps you need a professional blind conservatory company.

You have a dome on top - mine do anyway. Velux make solar powered blinds that fit between. But 3 month delivery due to chip shortages…

It's my understanding anyway, that you have domed or sloping skylights in conventionl opaque flat roofs; as flat skylights would simply be a trap for debris bird droppings. leaves etc. With  a domed or sloping skylight, these are washed away our of sight with the first drop or rain. And maybe cleared away every so often
Whereas with a flat glass roof, its questionable why anyone would need or want skylights in the first place. While any debris would simply wash down off the dome or the slope and settle on the surrounding flat glass. But as always I'm open to correction on this.

I've used Blinds to go and found them very good too.  They have a huge range and even the non thermal blinds help to keep out the heat in this ridiculous weather.  Surely they would also add some insulation in the winter too?

There seem to be more types of thermal blinds than there used to be.  I've spent ages in the past looking for extra wide blinds.Velux is definitely impressive.  They have an insect net blind as well as the thermal one that you add to the outside of your blind. They were also very helpful online when we bought a new blind for a friend's old window and had difficulty fixing it not that long ago.I wondered whether it was actually possible to use a pole and hook to pull a blind up and down that is at an angle.  Wouldn't it sag?  I remember a seafaring friend attaching an awning with eyelets in it to the inside of her conservatory roof many years ago.
