Fish Shop Devonshire Road

I seem to recall that the antique shop on Devonshire Road that is now going to become a oyster bar/fish shop was when I came to W4 in late 1980s a fish shop that was in competition with the existing TGT shop, in that they just sold fish and had no dining facilities. If my memory is right, an interesting example of "what goes around, comes around"! I hope they have more luck with their model than the combined fish stall at the front and fish restaurant at rear (Fishworks ?) in TGT which sadly went out of business several years ago.

IIRC the Fishworks on TGT was part of a chain of restaurants that went into administration and was bought out.  Chiswick wasn't one of the locations the new owners kept open but there are still a few Fishworks in central London.It will be interesting to see the oppor-tuna-ty for the new place on Devonshire Rd.I'll get my coat...

That was Portch's fish shop which had moved to Devonshire Road  after having had 2 shops on  Chiswick High Road, one of which was near where Tiger is now.

Thanks Karen for the history. I used to buy all my fish there when I first came to W4 and recall a very youngish owner running. I always felt it was never going to be the best location to catch customer footfall compared with the TGT located competition, which sadly proved to be the case with its subsequent closure and later conversion to an antiques shop.

I couldn’t remember the name but as posted above Portch's sounds familiar as the owners of the Devonshire Rd fishmongers when I first moved to Chiswick. They had a system where you had to pay cashier for the fish at a sort of booth. Later on there was another fishmonger at the same site run by a young brother and sister but I have forgotten the name.

I came to Chiswick in 77 and remember 3 fish shops.

I believe the owner of this new venture has good knowledge of the competition on TGT. And a very good fishmonger he is too.  His relationship with an excellent local independent sushi-chef promises good things for a place like this. I always thought this corner was better suited to a hospitality business with its south west corner and space for tables. The footfall difference with TGT will be a challenge so it has to be a destination.I wish the new owners a lot of luck. I love CGF and some healthy competition can't be a bad thing for the punters.

It was Nicholsons. It's nice that the current owners of CVG in the terrace actually smile and are friendly. A pleasant change.....
