It isn't unknown for some lawyers to charge based on the value of the estate. Can be a huge mistake to accept thst

Yes, David, they often charge 4-5% of the total value of the entire estate (plus expenses, VAT etc, which is fair enough).Banks can charge double that.

Sarah I obviously don't how complex the estate is that you are dealing with. I found the very lengthy HMRC guidance notes which you can download excellent. You can also telephone the Inheritance Tax Office for help; which I did some years ago. May be more difficult now. I can confirm lawyers can be very expensive. IF you employ one I suggest get a quote for the specific problem/s you have. In my view on no account approach a bank for help.
