Platnum!

It is bad enough having had to cope with the pervasion of Aluminum over the years, but now we have seem to have an outbreak of Platnum - whatever next?!

Some people are dyslexic without  knowing it.All my life I have been found it difficult to spell and it was only in mid life I realised that I had the condition.

Do we really need to pick apart people’s pronunciation, spelling, poor punctuation?  I was taught it was bad manners and unkind. Plenty of people with learning difficulties or just poor spellers, that should still be allowed an opinion. So many more important issues I think

There are more important issues suggests Maggie?You didn't live in Chiswick during WW2 when hundreds of bombs fell in the area. As MacMillan (sp?) said "you've never had it so good" to be living in W4 at this time!No offence intended to those who 'aired'their responses (Irvine,Ayrshire...get it?).. the thread was a opportunity to continue the Cheese thread..and play with words.Poor spellers may perhaps learn from this thread..and save themselves future embarrassment.

Yes, I have been noticing in the run up to this weekend that many people on TV have used this pronunciation which I hadn't come across before.  A little research elicited the fact that it is often used across the pond - hence my reference to Aluminum.

David, what you seem to have noticed is what linguists call elision.  We find it in normal speech and it also occurs in words such as ‘family’ (‘fam’ly’) and ‘gardening’ (‘gard’ning’).  It’s not wrong, it’s a natural and ubiquitous feature of everyday speech and WE ALL DO IT.  Anyone who tried to enunciate every vowel would end up sounding ridiculous and/or the victim of misguided elocution lessons.

So David's OP topic was nothing to do with correct spelling... which fooled me and led to a string of upsets for which I apologize. It was the wisdom of Alastair to detect that the issue was pronunciation. All credit to him.. a debits to me!

Yes - I was trying to allude in a light-hearted way to the fact that this alternative pronunciation - of which I had not previously been aware - was becoming prevalent.

if writing a book it would be important to get the spelling spot on, in reallife anything goes as far as I am concerned.
