Why is Chiswick controlled by Hounslow council.

Just wondering why a district  in London is controlled by a council outside London?

Because we live in Greater London now, the city has spread out in all directions taking in areas that once were county towns.

And just to add that Chiswick comes under two London Boroughs - Hounslow and Ealing.

From Chiswick's Wikipedia entry - "From 1894 to 1927 the parish formed the Chiswick Urban District. In 1927 it was abolished and its former area was merged with that of Brentford Urban District to form Brentford and Chiswick Urban District. The amalgamated district became a municipal borough in 1932. The borough of Brentford and Chiswick was abolished in 1965, and its former area was transferred to Greater London to form part of the London Borough of Hounslow."If the 1927 merger had combined Chiswick with Ealing or Hammersmith rather than Brentford then the likelihood is that in 1965 it would not have become part of LB Hounslow.

In the 1950s there was a predecessor to the 1965 borough re-organisation and this proposed 52 boroughs.  Obviously this was rejected in favour of fewer, larger boroughs.The 1957 proposal was a borough made up from Brentford, Chiswick and Acton.https://citymonitor.ai/government/herbert-commission-here-are-52-london-boroughs-could-have-been-2115

In addition prior to 1965 you would have had the County of London which ended at the border of Chiswick and Hammersmith in the West. So in 1965 Greater London was established and the Borough of Hounslow and others were created.Acton obviously became part of Ealing.
